Something that doesn't quite make sense to me is that I can get fully cooked rotisserie chickens for 1.66/lb at Sam's club but the packaged, raw whole chickens are like 1.78/lb. If I lived closer to Sam's I would buy one of those 3-4 times a week.
Whole chickens that haven't sold and are near their expiration date are turned into fresh, slightly discounted rotisserie chickens. If your grocery store has a salad bar, that is all made from verging on unsellable produce, as well.

be careful when you buy those rotisserie chickens, seems like every time i buy one of those the chicken is only maybe 80% cooked and it makes me fucking sick and its usually like they dipped that shit in a vat of salt, if i am out of ideas for chicken i will grab one then cook it in my oven for another 20 minutes just to make sure. i dunno why i even bother because my toaster oven has a rotisserie feature, the thing just takes two days to complete and its only made for chickens that were starved to death at a very young age.

@Lanx, heyas man we are not from each other im over here near nutley in essex county.

Where do you shop? I buy at least one almost every week and have never run into that problem, and since my GF lives in Lyndhurst I'm down near you a lot and want to make sure she ain't shopping at your crappy grocery store.

Costco sells badass Rotisserie chickens for $4.99. And they are always 5+ lbs. Just huge. We buy one or two every time we go. Pretty sure they just sell them as a loss leader since they are all the way at the back of the store.

You sure they are 5lb+ because that's a big fucking chicken. The one's at Sam's for $4.99 are pretty big too but they are around 3.5lbs (according to the price tag). I mean, they are quite a bit larger than the ones you can get at a place like Stop and Shop but they aren't 5lbs.

most of the chickens i've seen at stopnshop are 3 to 3.5 max, only purdue does the nearly 4.5lb and i'm sure that's the biggest. I also try to avoid the purdue whole chicken, idk it looks like a pam anderson when i want a balanced alison brie. usually the 4 to 5lb's are the "roaster" type, i don't really like those much.

I usually pick the chicken clean and shred it up and re-cook it for various meals like Tacos and Soups primarily. I used to work at a supermarket and I know that the deli people they hire are bottom-barrel and generaly walk a thin line with the health department on food safety.

Pro tip never eat anything that wasn't fried first (without cooking it again at home) at a store that's not Whole Foods, Costco or PCC.

What is a "loss leader"? Is that a retail term?
Basically an item that a store willingly takes a small loss on(or breaks even at best), just to generate traffic into the store in the hopes that customers will buy other stuff. Best Buy used to use music CDs as loss leaders, they made zero profit off of their cheap-ass CDs. They were selling CDs for $8-$10 when most stores were selling them for $15-$18. But once they got you in the store, they hoped that other stuff would catch your eye.

And while they aren't necessarily loss leaders, that's why every grocery store on Earth puts the milk and meat sections at the back of the store, they know those are the two things that people might make a quick stop to buy alone, so they want to make you walk by everything else to get them. Nobody is putting gallons of milk up by the registers, every though its one of the top-selling items in a grocery store. Same general principal, drive foot-traffic with highly sought-after items.

I think some are, not all. If I remember right, the wording on the packaging says something like "at least 4 lbs" or something of that sort, but some are clearly larger than others. Some barely fit in the packaging. Regardless, they're bigass chickens for $5. I make the best chicken salad on Earth with them.

the two worst offenders are the nutley shop rite and the belleville pathmark. i dont bother with the pathmark anymore, but i still do shop rite every week because their food prices are pretty damned sweet. just dont fuck with their already cooked foods. the rotisserie chicken is always undercooked, their bucket of fried chicken is always undercooked and one time i made the mistake of eating their turkey meatloaf without cooking it some more and i was sick for 2 fucking days, shit made me miss a day of work. their other already made foods i wont even touch because they keep them in those buffet style trays, but it has no sneeze guard and the food has been in there so long it looks like its all coated with leather. the deli section however is awesome, get a foot long roast beef, ham or turkey sub with cheese and everything on top for 2.99. i buy a few, bring em home add some more cheese, pepperoni, mayo and hot mustard and for 6 bucks i got lunch for the week.

Link to best chicken salad on earth recipe?
I basically use this one
Ingredients
1 whole Cut Up Fryer Chicken
2 stalks (to 3 Stalks) Celery, Chopped
3 whole Green Onions, Chopped
2 cups (to 3 Cups) Grapes, Halved
1/2 cup Mayonnaise
1/2 cup Plain Yogurt Or Sour Cream
A Small Handful Of Fresh Dill, Minced
1/2 cup Slivered Almonds
1 Tablespoon (to 2 Tablespoons) Brown Sugar
Juice Of One Lemon
Kosher Salt To Taste
Fresh Ground Black Pepper To Taste

Preparation Instructions

Rinse chicken thoroughly and place in a large pot of water. Turn on the heat and bring to a boil.
Reduce heat and simmer until chicken is done (about 45 minutes to an hour). When you are ready, remove the chicken from the pot and place on a plate. With your fingers or a fork, pull all of the meat off the bones, chop into bite-sized chunks and set aside.

Chop all of your fruits and veggies and place them in a bowl with the chicken.

In another bowl mix mayonnaise, yogurt (or sour cream), lemon juice, brown sugar and salt and pepper to taste.

Add fresh herbs (dill, oregano, cilantro.whatever makes your skirt fly up) and if you're feeling a bit brazen throw in a dash of cayenne pepper!

When the dressing tastes just right (you must taste test for appropriate saltiness especially), pour it over the chicken/veggie/fruit mixture and stir gently until everything is thoroughly mixed.

I do add the dash of cayenne pepper as mentioned in the instructions, and I generally omit the almonds(I hate almonds) and I also add a bit of fresh garlic to the chicken salad(mixed into the mayo/sour cream step), I also add 1 spoonful of dijon mustard.

That's pretty much it. Obviously, I just skip all the steps for cooking the chicken, and used a rotisserie chicken instead.

I've also made some variations, sometimes I leave out the grapes and add hard-boiled eggs(chopped) instead, that's also damn good.

That basic sauce with the mayo/yogurt/lemon/dill/mustard/garlic is goddamned awesome though. Once you have that mastered, the rest of the ingredients barely matter(other than the chicken)

I like the celery just for the texture, it's nice to have that crunch when everything else is soft and squishy, but I do tend to leave out the grapes more often than not. I certainly don't go out of my way to go buy grapes if I don't have any, I only use them if there happens to be some in the fridge anyways.

Odd, I hate celery specifically for the texture. Celery salt/seed is a useful seasoning, celery itself is fine in soups, I just can't stand it raw in salads. I'd rather have mushy potato salad. I did see you have some nuts in there. Change them from slivered to chopped.

Fuck the 70's(within the context of this thread):

il_fullxfull.143233929.jpg

I've had jello with shredded carrots. Not disagreeable, I just don't see the point. Kinda like jello itself. I'd rather save the calories for something that at least tastes better, like dessert. Or will get me fucked up.

I mean, really, fuck the 70's:
