Yes, the image quality is due to my using a phone from the 1890s to take the picture =/ It was incredibly rich and I think I covered my fats/calorie quota for almost a week consuming it, but totally worth it.

That pic looks like he's eating a big ball of cookie dough with a fork. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

It had the caloric value of eating a big ball of cookie dough, so yeah, close enough.

Seriously though, it was an alfredo sauce (I used heavy cream, garlic, minced shallots, salt/white pepper) for the pasta (I used spaghetti noodles instead of the normal action due to availability) then I cooked a 8oz piece of chicken breast wrapped in bacon (again, didn't use pancetta due to retard-level pricing in so-cal) before slicing it cube style and then incorporating it and some diced tomatoes (the pink coloration) and olives (the black things in the picture) until it separated from the non-stick pan. Once it roiled, I royaled the fuck out of it.

JFC, so our trip to friends house our first night there i offer to make dinner (even bought a brined chicken with me). My arm actually got tired do basic chopping chores with their blunt as shit knife. The only knife i knew that would be sharp is the knife i bought them an ugly ass rachael ray knife with a furi knife sharpener built in, was in the dish washer.

And they cook all the time, and live in a nice million dollar home, so they're not paupers.

But you know, you can only offer to sharpen knives, you can't ask them to change the way they do things, like cutting fucking pears on a ceramic plate with a knife i spent 1hour sharpening.

just try to keep your knives sharp, dear god these knives felt no better than a butter knife, i pleaded with them to at least use the steel once a week.

I'm thankful that I learned how to use a steel in HS when I worked at the BBQ place.

We went to my wife's aunt's house for butchering one time, and we started cutting up pork for sausage, and all the knives were dull as shit. I asked them if they had a steel. They did, but they didn't know how to use it and they all looked at me like I was a wizard showing them the greatest show of all time as they dumped about 30 knives in front of me. So I spent most of the day sharpening knives instead of cutting meat.

Having said all that, I know jack shit about knives and wish I knew as much about them as lanx. I may have to get a german and a japanese knife just to try them out, but I'm a cheap bastard.

My Mom will not use a fucking cutting board. She knows cutting on a plate or a steel pan dulls up her knives, she knows that doing it in my presence bugs the shit out of me, and she just goes ahead and does it anyway. I halfway think she does it on purpose just so I will take it away from her, get out the cutting board, and slice up whatever she is cutting for her. If so then it works.

Knives are a potentially endless well of information you COULD learn, but the basics can be summed up in four sentences that'll suffice for 95% of people.

1. Do not cut on things that are not wood or plastic.
2. Use a steel every time you use your knife.
3. Wash and put away your knife immediately. Storage should be someplace with no dampness (which is why knife blocks suck).
4. Get them sharpened professionally once a year.

Anyone use one of those magnetic strips to hold the knives? I keep looking at it rather than a knife block so I can keep it somewhat-more-out-of-reach of my kids.

I do. I like them a lot. Just gotta remember to twist away as you take the knife off, so the edge doesn't scape the metal.

i use a double mag knife strip, i'm in an apt so i can't bust up the tile to hang knives so i just hang it on the side of the fridge, it wasn't easy to find and truthfully looks like it was made to be versitile for knives or the toolshed(seems like it'd be best to hang this on the side of a steel tool box)

but it works well.

i recently bought a bit of wood i plan to use as a way to work on knives/whetstones over the sink

basically like this

but i'm not paying 80bucks for that overpriced shit, kitchen liner is all i need for a sturdy fit.

I have a magnetic strip for my knives, and I'm really happy with it. All knives presently visible at all times while working, and extra drawer space.

Everbilt Wall-Mounted Magnetic Tool Bar-17962 - The Home Depotsuper motherfucking strong magnetic bar. so strong i accidently let it sit on the steel counter at the checkout , even though its in a plastic case, it made a loud THONK noise and i had to use quite a bit of force to get the thing off of there.

as to the knife sharpening, every house has an excellent knife sharpener. just turn an ordinary coffee mug upside down and very lightly pass the edge of the knife over the untreated ceramic bottom for a razor edge.
