Wow, yet another case where if someone had a gun and a little training they could have saved themselveshttp://www.wfaa.com/news/local/rough...189536271.html

(I know, I know. I apologize. Going to hell, etc)
So now we are calling someone a "hero" for sending them into a country that we invaded under false pretenses, to kill people who were defending their homeland and that have never done us any harm?

Why do we continue to let these weak, soft cravens who can't handle "stress" into our armed forces?

A MacArthur would be utterly disgusted with these men.
You would piss your pants and throw up at the first sight of blood, faggot. You are the biggest pussy on this board and that says a lot.

Or maybe the people whose job it is to deal with PTSD vets know more about it than you do. Crazy talk, I know.
I'm sure he knew a lot about PTSD. He obviously also knew a lot about guns. But whatever he knew, or what he thought he knew, that knowledge failed him in this case. That's the problem with guns. You have to respect them. Let your guard down even once and that mistake is irreversible.

Uh, most of those people were "defending" jack and shit. They were fighting a civil war for power that would have turned into all out genocide if we weren't there. Much of the insurgency weren't even Iraqis. And I'm not saying we shouldn't have just let them do exactly that, but the body count likely would have been a hell of a lot higher if we had just toppled Hussein and left.

Now, I still think labeling every person who ever served in the military or police or fire or whatever a 'hero' is a bit much. But on the flip side, there are people who fucking RAGE about the mere idea of a "murderer" like him being called a hero, no matter what selfless acts he may have performed. And I say fuck those idiots.

Soldier's don't get to pick their war. They can't all be Great Wars of Liberation celebrated with holidays and songs.

You're the one apparently arguing that handing a gun to someone with mental health issues is a great idea. I think even the NRA would hold up their hands and say "WHOA now, lets not get carried away..."
The NRA walked back their past support of background checks so I'm not sure how committed they are to screening for mental health issues other than to use it as a point of fear. Who qualifies as mentally unsuitable for a gun, or for anything for that matter?

As for the site you linked, the lawyer is specifically talking about situations in which a LEO refuses to sign (they don't have an obligation to do it, they can leave it on their desk as long as they like). The lawyer is not calling out the weakness of the system, he is pointing out the ATF intimidating officers, which he gives a good example of if you follow the links he posted.
This is the only reason I even got my trust made. The CLEO of the county I'm in will not sign off on any Class III transfers, so I'm shit out of luck unless I move. I'm in the military and the only law violations I've had in my life have been a speeding ticket and an accident I got in that was my fault, with the ticket being about 6 years ago and the accident about 10. The fact that some counties have officials that absolutely refuse to sign anything for anyone is ridiculous and just petty. It's not skirting the law, it's circumventing the bullshit factor. You still have to wait 6+ months for the ATF paperwork to be approved before you get your goods anyway.

The difference is we haven't yet crafted a series of American folk tales deifying modern veterans and white-washing any negative details out of the history. The guys coming back from WW2 were just as fucked up if not more.

And part of it has to be something to do with the environment they come back to. It probably sucks when war becomes your reality and you come back home to find that life went on without you as normal, either no one gives a shit about your "sacrifice" or they call you a baby killer or they slapped a magnetic sticker on their car and shared a facebook post so they "support the troops."
This. I remember my grandfather telling me stories about stuff that he and other Marine buddies did after they got home from the war. Everything turned out OK so to speak, but they were extremely reckless and were doing lots of shit that was illegal, but the "heroes" thing basically gave them a get out of jail free card (literally). But we probably overlook murders, people drinking themselves to death, people doing reckless things that got them killed...probably because even back then people overlook stuff. Hell, coroners today in certain states will rule deaths "accidental" instead of "suicide" just for the family's sake, even if evidence points to the latter being the more likely manner of death.

There really was no help for soldiers back then from a mental health perspective, though.

Just to pretty much echo a lot that hodj said. It's pretty common for vets to get together and go shooting for pretty much all the reasons he mentioned. My group is about a dozen-twenty strong, picking up new dudes as we find them and we hit the range about once a month. After the range we always go back to a buddies shop, clean guns and crack into some beers. It's pretty much just a way to unwind around those who shared some the things you did, who understand the things you've been through/are going through and a way to reconnect with that aspect of your life.

Transfer your Class III items to a trust. Skips the CLEO sign-off shit.

It may be insensitive, but if you think no one has made this argument, then you really haven't been following this thread.
Please point me to where anyone has said in this thread that if you have a gun nobody can shoot you. Because that's the stance that Kreugen chose to argue against.
