Yeah there is a ton of things on the newer TVs you need to account for, but at the end of the day its what you like visually.

For me, after months of research , and going to many show rooms i bought two Displays.

My video game TV is the Sony KDL-55W900. It hits every mark I want out of a purely video game display.

Shopping for the 65 inch for my Sports/Movie room was MUCH tougher. I did a month of going to different showrooms, mostly the Magnolia displays at Best Buy.
The sales people were very passionate about the plasmas, so I got to see them calibrated correctly at there best possible settings.

It came down to 3 tvs for me. The VT60, the ZT 60, and the Samsung F8500.
They put these side by side in every show room.
As much as I agreed on allot of things the Magnolia sales force was showing me, there was just something I still do not like about all the Plasmas.

Then I went to a really nice Magnolia showroom, that had an amazing setup to show the differences between all the reference quality sets side by side.
I met a dude there that was not only extremely knowledgeable, but also agreed that is always what the individual likes versus what the pros says is good.

Thats when I saw the f8000, and for me that was the set I wanted. From the almost non existent frame, to the LED tech competing very closely to the plasmas.
It was just everything I enjoyed including a razor sharp picture. It looks like a work of art.

The best way to describe that display is if you have ever seen a Samsung Galaxy note 10.1 2014 edition or a Note 3. Those screens are absolutely stunning. The blacks stay pitch black, and it's almost like the brightness from the set comes from the colors themselves. Now imagine that in a 65 inch version, and you have the f8000. Its not going to be for everyone, but it works perfect for me.

Will some people favor the Plasmas? yes Will some others favor the LEDS? yes

But let yourself decide that, not other people, or a spec sheet.

Finally had the time to do the 100 hour calibration and put on dnice's setting on my plasma.... AMAZING. Picture is flawless. Best $1000 I have ever spent.

So hows Chromecast? Thinking about picking one up because my old PS3 is an old, slow piece of shit.

Its pretty good, and its $25 at the moment(normally $35)Google Chromecast Wireless HDMI Streaming Dongle $25 + Free Shipping (Amazon Student Members Only) - Amazon Deals, Coupons and Promos

Honestly, it was pretty useless for the past few months but now that it has Plex support(out now for Plex Premium subscribers, TBA in the supposedly near future for Plex free version users) it should be a reasonable replacement for a Roku/Boxee/console for streaming your downloaded content. I just didnt find it useful yet because I dont subscribe to Netflix or Hulu Plus, so I really had no apps I used on it, until Plex finally.

If you use Plex or Netflix though, its a no brainer

You can get it for free then, amazon is running that promotion where you link your wish list on facebook and get a 30-35 buck credit.

I think that promotion is still going on

As an avid Boxee user for my NAS streaming downloaded content, how does Chromecast replace it? Chromecast is still operative over Wifi, correct? There's no way WiFi can flawlessly stream 1080p DTS-HS MA (BluRay quality rips) in my experience. Sure it would be fine for 720p TV shows and crap, but I still havent found a Boxee replacement at all. (Aside from a dedicated HT PC)

Yes, Chromecast is entirely wireless, no wired option. I don't download Blu-Ray quality rips, so that was never a factor for me. I personally don't have the storage space for hundreds of movies at 10+GB per movie, as I tend to keep the movies I download, I don't just watch and delete. I've got ~4TB worth of drives devoted to video and its already almost full :/

I have a 5 bay x 2TB NAS that is about 80% full. I use this for two PC backups, a Photoshop Archive, Document / Data drive, as well as Media Server. I generally get the 10-15GB BluRay rips as well as quite a few full seasons of TV Shows. I have gone in and deleted some stuff from time to time when I realize I have no intention of ever watching it again. Even if I changed my mind, my 100MB fiber line can download it in minutes. I am, however, shopping around for 4TB drives to replace them.

I am happy with my CAT6 wired solution to a switch in my media closet. The switch also feeds my Samsung TV, Denon Receiver, and PS4. I have another Boxee upstairs in the bedroom, but WiFi streaming that BR quality content is near impossible. It sucks even worse when FF or RW seeking through a program.

Pretty sure wired is the only solution for this stuff.

Yeah I have my entire basement wired with Cat 6 (gaming PC, DirecTV receiver, XBOX 360, WDTVLive, Denon receiver) but the entire upstairs of my home is on wireless(damn ceiling in the finished basement is drywalled rather than tiles, and i dont want to drill holes everywhere). I stuck a Chromecast on both of our upstairs TVs and it works great. But I'd say 90% of my downloads are 720p (our smaller bedroom TV is only 720p anyways)

I tend to be a technology pack rat, and while I can quickly download any movie I want to re-watch, I have a sinking feeling in my gut that torrents/movie downloads may not be as easily accessable down the road at some point, so I try to hold on to them, but the space requirements are getting kind of stupid, especially when I haven't actually gone back to watch 90% of the stuff more than once.

Nah that shit is going to be around forever. Companies have really no way to fight it so they are slowly learning to work with it.

It's always something Joeboo. You should know by now there is no way to beat the masses on this filesharing shit.

Everything they try to implement gets over ridden by the first couple of days.
A smart company evolves with it, they don't waist millions fighting a war they will never win.

Filesharing will not go away in our lifetime.

My in-laws (and all 3 sons) have this shitty projection Phillips or Panasonic probably from the late 90's. The bulb on it goes out about every 6 months or so and is $150. They've repaired it so many times that they are able to predict when it will fail and usually buy the bulb a few days before it happens.

The other day I said "at $300/year, don't you think a new TV is a better investment?" They agreed and I was going to help them pick something out that was nice and wouldn't hurt their wallet. The dad went shopping at Walmart for food and came home with a 50 inch Vizio. Can't win people.. can't win.

Vizio is a perfectly fine brand. They aren't the best, but they're cheap, reliable, and have decent picture quality. Sure you can get better, but you can also do a whole lot worse. They're a very good balance of price/performance. They're like the Honda of TVs. Reliable, affordable, but not very flashy.

Every Vizio I've ever watched for an extended period of time has looked like shit to me. Maybe there are winners out there, but the ones I've seen are not.
