I went to a best buy with my dad when I was in 5th grade. He told me to pick out a CD so I picked out a Korn album, don't remember which one. He called it pornographic and laughed at me. I still live with the shame of that to this day.
did he let you buy it?

I would imagine he probably felt the way you will feel when your son someday asks you to buy him the new Kendrick Lamar album
I will avoid this by putting headphones on my infant son and playing Johnny Rebel songs as he goes to sleep every night.

I have always had earbuds break on me. Anyone have recommendations for durable earbuds, I am not looking to spend anymore than say... 100$ at most, braided cord would be optimal.

Anyone have impressions and can compare Sennheiser HD558's with foam mod and the HD650s? Looking to upgrade maybe...

This would be a big jump, worlds apart sound wise. I have had a pair of HD 565 Ovations since 90s and love em. (Old 565 and 580s are fairly close, were eventually replaced by 600/650s). My 565s are still superb after multiple rebuilds (new pads, headbands, rewired and eventually new cables): still incredibly comfortable and great sounding as ever.

For comparison I also have a pair of new HD 598s for TV room that are decent but nowhere close in comfort or richness of responsive range. I can also wear and listen to my 565s all day @ work & home and still be comfy. But 598 cans are smaller, tougher and too tight for all day work listening. Only drawback is the 565s are noiser to family or co-workers in same room.

Something else to consider when moving up to 650s: you might want an amp with a lil more juice to drive them. I use a lil SMSL M3 mini DAC for my 565s.

Thanks for the comparison, I figured it would be a huge jump. It's either those or a set of DT990 250 or 600 ohm I'm thinking. I just went down the amp path and got a Schiit Magni 2 Uber, which is also what's sort of driving the desire to upgrade now that I've got the power. I got a Mixamp Pro Tr for chat on my consoles and that seems ok but I may bite the bullet and just get the full stack and order a Modi Multibit for solo play.

I mostly use these to game with so soundstage is important, any thought's there?

I do not console, but have you considered whether HD650s might not be overkill hifi equip for gaming sound?

My kids use old HD555s and 595s for the TV, PC gaming and discord.

Anyone here able to recommend a reciever able to decode Zone 2 audio from a digital hdmi source? Or know how to hack/mod the Linux firmware config on an Onkyo TX-NR555 to decode hdmi audio to analog zone 2 out?

Just recently upgraded to the Onkyo from an all analog setup. I love the all HDMI/coax/spdif inputs for both audio and video but I've hit a wall with the Zone 2 configuration.

The setup atm....

I have a 5.1 speaker system hooked up for surround and want my old hifi amp and speakers to play the stereo version at same time but with my old amp. When I bought the bleeding reciever I was told it would decode digital to zone 2 speakers BUT !@#%#$ the POS thing refuses to decode audio from the hdmi inputs argh, only cd/net or usb. Fine print in the pdf manual says hdmi audio decoding to zone 2 *might* not be supported on my model.

Temp solution plays audio/video from my htpc over both of its audio outs, the hdmi (5.1) and spdif optical out. I jury rigged a mini dac to decode the spdif, feed the appropriate analog input on the reciever, and switch the Zone 2 output with remote to the input source specifying Analog. Kind of a PITA and means I need to manually switch cables if I want to use a different PC source. I was originally hoping to be able to switch everything using the remote from outdoors to listen to music/movies/TV from my pc inside and out.

They are probably exactly where you want to be all around. Soundwise, dollarwise, and overall value. Buy the HD650's used. They are probably the best-built headphones. Save a hundred bucks and call it a day.

DT990's have the wider soundstage.

Looking for a headset that has good sound, but is easy to pack into a backpack/suitcase for travel.

Right now, 50% of my days are spent out of town traveling, and my Amazon.com: Sennheiser GAME ONE Gaming Headset - Black: Computers & Accessories while fantastic, are too big to continue taking with me everywhere. I love how it comes with 2 cords, one that has seperate headphone/mic jacks for computer use, and the other to use with cellphones where the headphone/mic is in 1 plug. I would like that same functionality.

So I'm looking for much more compact so it travels well, and can work with a cell phone for on the plane and computer when I get to the hotel room and I'm bull shitting around on Discord with buddies.

Any suggestions?

Edit: Doing some Googling, there is either nice full on gaming headsets, or wireless earbuds of different size/quality. Maybe I'll just make my friends deal with a shitty Apple Earbud mic, and pick up one of these? I travel with my ATH M50xs. They are by no means super compact but they do fold into the band so they are fairly small for full size closed soundstage headphones. I have to have passive noise cancelling of some sort on planes to not want to murder children and such so instead of earplugs I compromise with those. Keep in mind I listen to music so sound quality to me is worth the but extra bulk, all else considered.

If you want to add a mic, ModMic 4.

If you want some super portable shit it's going to be those single earbud with mic built into the cable pieces of trash.

You mean the ear cups fold so it can lay more flat? that's a huge improvement space wise compared to most headsets. Would slide into my backpack easier, or lay flat in my suitcase.

Will keep those in mind, along with the ModMic 4. Thanks!

It's not flat, it's a little ball. Think maybe a bit bigger than your fist.

Looking for a BT stereo headset to replace my LG Tone+ HBS-730 that cuts out the signal even if I just get my arm between it and the phone and the right channel is dying (like half the volume of the left). Any recommendations? I've looked at the current Tone line-up and there's a shitload of them and from what I can tell the more expensive you get the less people seem to like them. Doesn't have to be LG though, just IEMs with a neckband.
