Went for an eye exam today, have had trouble reading things at a distance and since I have a month off work I'm trying to tie off loose ends. Turns out I do need glasses but the prescription was pretty light compared to my wife's (0.75 to 3.25)

What worried me more is he wants me back in 6 months to check on some hemorrhaging in my eyes due to the diabetes. He said it's mild and not In the center of the eye (forget what fancy word he used)

Just worries me a little bit. At 31 and diabetic, I'm scared shitless of any potential complication from the disease. Also no doctor ever believes me when I say I'm type 2, I guess I don't look like I'd have it?

It IS weird to see skinny/not huge dudes with type 2. You just assume type1 if they're younger than 30 and/or not a lardass.

Gotta be honest. You lost the diabetes lottery on that one.

And if he's talking about a 6 month checkup I wouldn't be too worried about it at all. Glasses tend to be yearly (maybe even 18/24 months after your eyes stop changing as much 35+)... but the op's really would like to see you every 6 months anyway. In the case of a diabetic it's probably a good idea anyway. And hemorrhaging sounds a lot scarier than what he probably noticed. But technically you gotta call it something, and it's generally best to call it what it actually is.

Woulda been so much worse to hear, "I saw some spots at the periphirery of your light-catcher-things and they're weirding me out man. Come back in 6 months and lets see if they're still there."

Yeah I mean he showed me pictures of the hemorrhaging and then showed me what it should look like. He said it can heal and just wants to monitor it for changes so that we can get on top of it.

Unfortunately I used to eat terrible (fast food twice a day, drinking soda all day) so it was mostly my fault.

You clearly were the result of shaken baby syndrome. Gotta have that retinal hemorrhage, y'know.

Got my glasses. Life is so much clearer holyshit. I can play video games from my couch 12 feet away and see everything. I can read everything on the TV and road signs and shit. I haven't been able to see this good for like 15 years. Damn. What was i waiting for.

Released from my Doctor and NP, transferred to a cardiologist they are setting up at a different medical facility. Congestive Heart Failure, no other details or stage or how bad or anything really until I see the specialist and tests are done.

Definitely give contact lenses a shot man -- get the dailies. Going from nothing to glasses is a huge step, but contacts give you 100 percent peripheral... I really can't stand glasses in comparison; they're only good for early morning (letting your eyes clean out before putting lenses in).

I'm the opposite. I loathe contacts. I HATE how they feel in and I hate putting them in/taking them out. Fuck that. I'll keep my glasses.

Yeah.

Kinda figgured it was more along those lines that RA.

That just sounds more likely. And it is something which is amenable to treatments.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they get you set up with a dietitian and the proper medications to help treat it.

Maybe next year, I wanted to get used to wearing glasses first and then see how it goes. Just enjoying the fuck out of life right now

Shrug, obviously to each their own. That being said, it does take a few days to adjust to contact lenses. I also think they've gotten a lot better over the last 15 years. The dailies mean I don't have to fuck around with storage/cleaning -- they're cheap enough that throwing them away mid-day and getting a new one isn't even a big deal. I just don't know how glasses-wearers tolerate the limited peripheral vision... it just feels so awkward to me.

I'm with Tred. I don't enjoy contacts. I've got a thing about needles too though, so the discomfort could be 99% psychological.

Im type 1, had retinopathy since I was 21 and have maculopathy in both eyes, yay.

You are definitely anti-type for type diabetes 2 though. Fancy word he probably used was 'background retinopathy'.

Funny the topic was eyes. This morning I thought my contact was giving me hell.. by noon I've realized it's not my contact, it's goddamn everything. Weeks of crazy high pollen count is finally getting to me, I guess. I feel worse by the hour. Throwing up is starting to feel like a good idea rather than something to avoid at all costs. (I usually fight it until I'm actually sweating and getting room spins, heh)

Usually the first sign of the seasonal allergy thing is I start chewing my tongue and cheeks because they are swollen and the glands in my neck are sore to touch, and then the ear aches start. So annoying.

I even started on Claritin ahead of time this year.

Bonus points for leaving my passenger window down and dusting my car with a carpet of yellow fuzz.

FUCKING RAIN ALREADY

Right there with you, Kreug. I'm sitting at work and my eyes are just watering. Felt like I've come down with a cold for about a week now. I take about as much allergy medication as I can year round, so there isn't a ton I can do unless it gets so bad that I'd ask an allergist for a steroid treatment. I've never had to go that far though.

Worst time of the year for sure.

Oh man, yeah I hate allergy season. I didn't have any allergy issues at all until about my mid-twenties and it feels like every year has gotten progressively worse to the point where I will be half crippled for weeks on end now. The actual worst part for me is that I basically can't sleep during the worst of it because I'm so uncomfortable. Nothing over the counter seems to put a dent in them anymore either, I may have to see the doctor.

Cottonwoods are the absolute worst for me. When that stuff starts flying around I know I'll be miserable for at least the next two weeks.

You poor bastards. The only thing I'm allergic to is pine sap (makes me break out on my elbows).

And hard work.
