Gone Wild
Adventures and Expansions that are not part of the Standard format will no longer be available for purchase from the Shop-this year, that includes Naxxramas and Goblins vs Gnomes. If you want any cards you missed out on for Wild play or just to fill out your collection, you'll be able to craft them using Arcane Dust-even cards from Adventures that were previously un-craftable. Speaking of Adventures, if you've purchased at least the first wing of an Adventure before it cycled out, you'll still be able to finish acquiring and playing the remaining wings.
What the fuck?!?

I mean I guess new players won't need old adventures to be competitive in standard, but that seems really dumb.

Curse of Naxxramas and Goblins vs Gnomes will not be part of Standard. When we release the first new Expansion each year, every set that wasn't released in the same year or the year prior will cycle out and no longer be part of the Standard format.
Bye bye Boom and Shredder.

Yes! More deck slots! Prior to the arrival of Standard we've got a buff planned for your Collection Manager! If you've unlocked all nine heroes, you'll also unlock nine more deck slots, raising your total number of deck slots to eighteen.
So if its before standard (this "spring") that means deck slots really soon.

Who the fuck is ever going to play "wild" really? Is it me or will the vast majority choose standard?

No muster, no minibot, and they hinted at incoming nerfs, MC has to have a target on it by now.

Who's going to play any flavor of mage without mad scientist? And not that I'm sad for paladins but they lose half of their best cards from dropping GvG. But who knows maybe balance changes will fix some of these holes. I mean the one even remotely viable rogue deck is dead when oil is dropped.

Well even though I like using my entire collection, Standard is probably for the better. A lot of the "issues" in Hearthstone right now are due to too many tools available and OP shit combined with more OP shit. Now eliminating a lot of OP shit should make the game more fun again.

Will still be really strange never having to face mech mage, shredders, oil rogue, boom, etc, ever again.

This is what Hearthstone had to do to continue to grow. It was getting unwieldy and expensive for a new player to break into the game with the amount of cards needed to be bought/crafted.

MTG/Wizards came to the same decision in the late 90s.

I mean, it allows them a "do over" on their past fuck ups. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this basically how MTG keeps things going?

Yep, it's changed over the years but basically MTG is broken up into a few formats. The two most used for tournament play are "Standard" - which is the last ~2 years worth of expansions, and "Modern" - which is the last ~6 years. Sets are grouped into "blocks" of expansions, and when a new "block" releases another block rotates out.

I'm glad the legendaries I've crafted recently are all Classic ones. I'm definitely going to be saving my dust now though.

Has MTG ever 'rereleased' cards? There really are a lot of powerful cards going away without Naxx and GvG. Wondering if there's a precedence to to that, maybe with a different name or slightly tweaked

Hmm, Duel of Champions tried this same move, and it completely killed their game (literally, it's been officially cancelled). Invalidating a players time and/or money by banning their collected cards usually leaves a bad taste. The classic format in DoC was a total ghost town when they split the playerbase, so it will be interesting to see how well Hearthstone handles it.
