I counter your anecdotal evidence with a Illidan(immediately followed by 3 more cards) and a Baron Geddon that allowed him to clear my board. Remember, I didn't draft any epics either.

Here, let me put it this way.

RNG:
Quality level of each 3 cards
What 3 cards within that level
Deck shuffling
Coin toss

Skill:
Picking the 3 cards
Playing(obviously)

I think the quality part should be mitigated through better matchmaking. I just don't agree, many epics and legendaries can be game changers.

Baron Geddon is terrible in arena, Illidan isn't much better. A couple drafts ago, I took a 1/1 over Illidan. It honestly sounds like you would have lost just as hard to a Boulderfist Ogre.

Bloodmage Thalnos? He might be better overall, but he definitely doesn't have the late game impact that Illidan did. And no, a Boulderfist wouldn't have kill me. I dealt with Illidan just fine, it's the 3 flames that killed me.

Likely any of the other creature spammers would've too though, like the Violet Mage, I'd imagine.

Except you aren't frost tombing someone, you're just rooting them.

Not that I have a problem with buffing mages. There's still only what, 3 things in the game that can freeze a player? Frostbolt, Ice Lance, and Water Ele?
Frost elemental.

Also frost shock for shaman

they upped the mana cost of CoC and Blizzard by +1 so CoC is at 4 mana now and Blizzard at 6
Don't forget frost nova got a increase too

Got 1600 dust and crafted Millhouse. Set complete.

EDIT: Also hit rank 13 at a total of 60 wins. Was experimenting with a Warrior deck based around weapons that slowly mutated. It is still kind of hit or miss, so it was a little slower than before.

well taking damage is the thing, its the same problem that rogues have and warriors can mitigate with armor, there are much better (neutral) rare choices to pick over that shit weapon ie BGH, Faceless Manip, any of the giants

I'd put it on par with the Giants myself like Anti does - Giants are lightning rods to copy with Faceless or instakill with Assassinate/Sheep/Hex/Execute/etc but amazing when they're protected.

I think Doomhammer is best when you're doing 4dmg per turn to the enemy. When you start swinging at anything with more than 2 attacks with it it tends to be the slippery slope to getting fucked 1-2turns later. Also suffers the same issue as earth elem, it fucks your turn 6, and turn 6 is a big turn(especially so in constructed with sylvanas+cairne, but even in arena as you'll often have 1-5fire elems and boulderfist or commander or shit like that).

I hadn't really thought of the fact that Mages pretty much hold a monopoly on freezing. I'd be hesitant to buff a single class like that.

I just started playing in ranked matches today and so far I've only lost three games. Two of those times I played a hunter who used Unleash the Hounds to take a poop on my day. I think I'm at like a 90% win rate overall though.

The deck I've been using so far is a really cheap Warlock Murloc deck. It's fast and pretty fun to play.

Alternatively, I'm sitting on this for the lower ranks where I suspect my aggro style might be less tenable.

Aggro is pretty much viable at all levels, might be slightly less consistent, but since you're playing so many games I guess it makes up for it. Made it back up to rank 9 and starting seeing a rash of warlock murloc, one of which was already back up to rank 4 with it. I'm running a fairly heavy anti aggro deck and can still lose to these decks.

So looking at your mage deck, you have too many 1 drops and nothing to stop aggro. You're not going to outrace aggro because you have some late game cards in there and you're not going to get to late game because you have too many 1 drops. I also think 2 gadgetzans and archmage is a bit ambitious. For laddering you may want to consider replacing the amani berserkers with sunfury protectors, I'd drop the ice lances at least, add in acolytes of pain, and drop the gadgetzans and add any of faceless/doas/chillwind yetis, or cairne ideally if you have him.

Seeing how clutch it has been for Trump in two separate arenas have convinced me that it's a solid card. Besides, it's not like I'm advocating taking it over an earth ele, but I'd probably take it over any other epic. Any board situation where it's worthless is a board situation where stormforged axe would probably be worthless too, and I don't think anyone is going to argue that stormforged is a bad pick.

You also don't have to (and probably shouldn't) drop doomhammer turn 5.

So I just started this weekend. Pretty fun so far. I like it. Its simple to get into and tough to master. I have absolutely no experience in card games before this so Im getting my ass kicked. anyone have any links to some beginner type guides tahe might clue me in a bit better?
