I'd also add sorta to what Angelwatch said. There are games that you lost on turn 1 but your health bar didn't reach zero until, say, turn 8. But make no mistake, you lost on turn 1. In fact, as a general rule, you won or lost whatever game you're playing several turns before either of you hit zero life. Some games get dragged out and it really is neck and neck and you're both at 3 life until one of you draws the perfect card (top-decking) and wins outright, but usually a game is won or lost turns before it is won or lost.
If I play a 3/2 creature on turn 2, and you play nothing at all on turn 2, that can often be the entire game right there in and of itself. Sure it'll take 9 or 10 more turns to kill you, but I won on turn 2. That is how slim the margins get. And they get even slimmer later. But honestly, the game is still a ton of fun just so long as you see what's actually happening and not thinking life was unfair to you. When you build your own deck you make your own luck, more or less.
