Yes, that's the point.
Well no, I disagree. Exhibitions are supposed to showcase the best of what the game had to offer with opponents that are equally skilled.

No one wants to watch a boxing match with Mike Tyson versus Pee Wee Herman. Well maybe some people, but I sure as hell don't

I've been posting since I got in the beta.

Of the 8 who played, I'll give you Husky + Day9, obviously invited for their association with StarCraft. Artosis, Trump, Noxious, Kripp and Hafu all still big parts of the HS community. Looked like Blizz did a pretty good job.

Good opener for Strifecro with no Giants in hand for Kolento.

And Strifercro got struck by RNG

Kolento could have the first match, he has everything in hand to control it.

Because Reckful didnt have people play his account off stream on the ladder.

He still does it till this day, passionate players my ass.
That shit was a popularity contest. There were plenty of legit players that wanted in on that were denied. There was a huge controversy when the players were announced.

I can understand how you know nothing of ladder manipulation, and how easy it would be to qualify friends into a qualifying tournament on separate accounts. Because let's face it you don't play this game, you are here just for me.

It was a tournament that was pre-open beta, that was obviously nothing more than a marketing ploy, they weren't even shameful about it, they let you know up front thats what it was.

Even if some ppl qualified through "ladder manipulation" they still had to qualify top 16 of a 136 player bracket, 56 of which were seeded through tournament qualifiers, and then place top 4 of another tournament of those top 16. And what would they accomplish by using "ladder manipulation" to get there? The ro136 players got nothing so just making it to the ro 136 means jack all and if you sold yourself short to get there by cheating you obviously won't have as much knowledge as someone who didn't.

I am curious though, of the remaining 16, how did they qualify to get there? Column thinks laddering is worthless for tournament play, yet the 3 names I'm familiar with that made it to the ro16 strifecro, kolento, and firebat have all always been high in ladder. And in ppl like strifecro's case he placed top 16 multiple times in those months I'm sure, but he was seeded through because of his tournament play.

Column thinks laddering is worthless for tournament play,
That's not what I said. Obviouslly Laddering is a huge advantage in getting into a big tournament vs tournament play itself.

I said Laddering is a completely different beast then tournament play, and shouldn't qualify people into a big tournament.

Kolento, and Strifecro can obviouslly get in off of regular tournaments

Fair enough, but there was something like 43 tournaments you could have also qualified through, I personally like having the multiple ways to qualify and using the ladder as one of the tools makes it fun, meaningful, and competitive.

For example, in starcraft 2 the na ladder was always a joke, the good players would play in korea or eu to face the real competition. Then totalbiscuit started a tournament where you had to be a high ranking gm player on the na server to participate and suddenly the competition on na ladder becomes fierce. Without ladder qualifiers it would make the ladder largely meaningless. People wouldn't strive to be on the top so you wouldn't see as much innovation.
