You can"t always have your cake and eat it too. Having a family means taking longer to save money to buy a home, it"s not rocket science. The worst thing you could do is try to cut corners and putting your family in a financially precarious position just because you feel like you have to "own" a home.
And I"m not sure why you feel like it"s some shameful thing to have a family and rent. People do it all the time, unless it"s an ego thing on your part.
