So this weekend finished a bit more. Leveled out both planter areas by the pool next to the house. Installed 2 Gardenias and 2 Pygmy Date Palms on one side, doing the other side tomorrow (took too long to level out the planter and ran out of top soil bleh). Going to put edging in on the side and got lava rock as an inorganic mulch. It's odd, I initially had some mixed feelings about removing the pavers from the planters and rehabilitating them but already it looks ten times better. I think I'm going to add even more palms to the back yard than I originally planned.

An aside:

Can anyone recommend a good lean-to style shed that's not too expensive? I need it for garden tools (wheelbarrow, 4 shovels, dethatcher, chainsaw, weedwhacker, etc.) and pool crap (skimmer, floaty shit, the robot, etc.) so I'm looking for more like a 4x8 to 4x12. I'd like to go more to 6x8 or so but so far anything wider than 4' they all have a gambrel or gable roof and I don't really want the extra rain between the house and the shed from that.

So far I've found this one that seems OK:Shop DuraMax Building Products Storage Shed (Common: 8-ft x 4-ft; Actual Interior Dimensions: 3.88-ft x 7.77-ft) at Lowes.com

Should a bathroom fan exhaust pipe have a cap on it? Went up on the roof yesterday to try to figure out how a family of mice(trapped 5 so far) made it into my attic. The fan exhaust was uncapped and that was the only point of entry that I could see.

The exhaust pipe itself smelled musty and was covered in green oxidation. At least I think that was oxidation, but I only thought copper oxidized that color and this definitely wasn't copper. Tin or aluminum. But anyway, I'm guessing there should be a cap on it because the pipe stands straight up and rain water getting in there seems like a really bad idea.

This doesn't help very much but my brass belt buckle oxidized to a similar copper green. So it may be an alloy consisting some of copper.

I was looking for a chest (wooden box, trunk, whatever you want to call it) and saw one at some furniture store in town. Damn thing looked made of 1/2" plywood, had a decent sanding job but was otherwise unfinished and looked like it had been put together by a 5 year old. They were asking $550 for the damn thing. Thought hell naw, remembered I had the two thirds of a 3/4" sheet of plywood laying around in the garage and figured I'd see what I could turn it into.

In your face capitalism.

Nice box, but you could of spent more time and did a bit of dado or lock miter jointery, also with the lid you could of lined the edges with hardwood edging or even an iron on plywood edging for that finished look and also so they dont splinter in the future.

I could have done a lot of things to improve it for sure. On top of the stain I put a good 3 coats of varnish I usually use on flooring projects so I figure it should look decent for a while. I mean, sky is the limit if you're willing to put a lot of time on a project of that type. But for about $60 of material and not much more than 10 hours of work, it's already a lot better than that joke they are selling for $550. Keep in mind I don't even have a table saw, it was all done with skillsaw and jigsaw, so I'm kind of limited on what I can do without buying new tools.

A few years ago I made a bunch of bat houses with my kids. Actually, a lot. And we had a lot of bats move in. Mosquitoes reduced.

Additionally, we have the tikki torches around the deck, and it seems to help.

Ultimately, you have to live with the mosquitoes.

There are still some old timers with ddt in wv, i recommend that. Keeping your grass short and the standing water out of the cars in the yard is another pro tip. There are waterhose applied chemicals for the yard but i suspect they don't do shit.

A fan is foolproof.

Looking at making more usage of my deck this year. what methods do you folks use to stop mosquitos? I don't have any standing water near my house.

I'm looking for maximum mosquito destruction for exp grinding reasons, so I'm thinking an army of bats or some kind of propane trap system.

Just keep a fan blowing...easier to do if you have a covered deck and can mount a ceiling fan to the underside of the roof/canopy, but an oscillating fan works just as well. Mosquitos HATE moving air, they won't touch you all night long if you're sitting under a ceiling fan.

We tried about everything you can think of at my dad's lake house to remedy mosquitos/bug bites, everything from citranella candles, to citranella tiki torches to sprays(store bought and home made), to bug zappers and homemade traps(jars, etc). Nothing works as well as fans do. And you don't need your fan blowing at hurricane levels or anything, we always just keps the ceiling fans on the lowest of the 3 settings and they work great.

alternately, get drunk as all hell and mosquitos tend to leave you alone. Apparently they aren't fans of blood laced with copious amounts of alcohol either. My mother(who doesn't drink) would always get WAY more bites than me and my dad who got shitfaced each night.
