How the fuck can a guy that makes 675k a year think $53/week is expensive

I had a relative that makes well over the 500k mark give me a wrapped in foil Ho-Ho in a christmas gift-basket. Not that Fal is a penny pincher / singey but just because a person makes a ton of money doesn't mean they enjoy spending money.

May I ask what troubles you have had? I have a pool, and the people who built the pool of course have a pool service, I pay like $53/week (they come weekly) and do all the water chemistry and clean out any debris on the pool. Honestly it's a little expensive but I love it, I literally do nothing but swim and they keep my pool awesome.

It was mainly that it required maintenance and ate into the small yard space we had. It was nice in the summer but if you aren't spending money on a service to maintain it, the process of maintenance is a pain in the ass during the winter (even though SoCal winters are a joke..). We had one winter where the thing turned green and we spent the better part of a year dumping and cleaning it out.

don't you also have to maintain your fence 110% b/c if some dumb kid decided to wander into the deep end of the pool and die, you goto jail for murder!

Because everything adds up! The 53 per week is over 200 a month, plus sometimes it's a little extra because of the chemicals. Electricity, gas, internet, cable, auto insurance, gas, vehicle lease, disability insurance, life insurance, umbrella insurance, mortgage, house cleaner, child support, my child's 529 plan, my child's brokerage account, professional subscriptions, my 401k, defined benefit plan, HSA, and backdoor roth conversion. I bought a $100 shirt for a stupid event last night and I kept the tags so I can return it tomorrow.

After having some friends with a pool, I would never want one. I've heard in some areas it actually reduces the property value because people don't want to deal with it. If you're really into swimming and want to do it every day, then it's probably worth it. Otherwise fuck that, let your kids play in the sprinkler.

Def reduce property values in MA. Can't use half the year and increase insurance. Better have a massive fucking ugly ass fence as well.

Pool ownership, short of a busted pump/filter/line burst is pretty easy once you get the hang of it. I find it pretty enjoyable actually cleaning and getting the chemicals locked in but to each their own. When it sucks though is the winter, where you have to do occasional upkeep to the chemistry/filter/leaf removal and it's cold as feck outside. I had an electric valve freeze "open" when it was 15 degrees here last month that was emptying my hot tub while it was circulating during the evening. That was fun. Once you get the chemicals right its pretty simple to maintain so long as you stay up with it.

We had an above ground pool in Jersey and it wasn't that bad, and we were hardly upper middle class at the time, more like lower, so costs weren't anything crazy.

I'm in florida so it's mostly year round use for me. Can't say as to whether or not it increases or decreases property value, but I suspect it increases it.

Serious question though, in florida wouldn't a swimming pool just be a breeding area for skeeters and giant bugs?

Or do you put so much chlorine in it that your first 3 layers of skin just burn off as soon as you dive in?

In a place like florida i'd want the least water around my house as possible is all i'm sayin. But if i had like 12 square acres, i'd probably put one over in the corner of the plot.

Pools are pretty hostile towards mosquitos. Also as the water is not standing (its being cycled through a filter) there is a far lower chance even without the chemicals. Standing / Still water is what mosquitoes are attracted too. Not flowing water.

Nah, mosquitos are only a concern for neglected pools and stagnant water. As Vinen said, the weekly shock (chlorine) treatments makes the water unsuitable for larva. Running the pump several hours every day also filters out pretty much everything.

Thinking about new appliances ... LG (as do others) has that new fridge where you can open a small door on the front to get drinks, etc, without opening the whole fridge. Looks great. Is that satin/matte black color a fad?

I'm currently looking for a house in Florida and anything with a pool gets bumped to the top of the list assuming the houses are comparable.

well, Dad arrived after baby and we are progressing on the bathroom at a pace..

Most the drywall is up including the ceiling, the look is...to be desired but a good learning point for me.

About to work on the sink wall / tub surround and remaining electrical. then seal it all up.

Dad is stuck on using 16 "Penny" nails, which I didn't even know what the heck he was talking about, I wanted to use spax for framing a small non-supporting wall we are doing for hardibacker.

QUESTION for hardibacker, do I need to redgaurd it?

I ASSUMED yes and bought the redguard in prep, but I would love to know a best practice.

Current plan is to:
  • put up backer
  • hit all penetrations with a dose of mesh tape and mud
  • hit the rim of the tub with mesh and mud
  • dry it a bit and then redguard it
gunna hit up a video or two to see if I'm fucking it up but I want double confirmation.

My dad hired someone to replace the ceiling in his cabin with ship lap.

It's vaulted.

Is there any reason it should not be perpendicular to the beams in the ceiling?

This joker put it all in what seems sideways. Running vertical instead of horizontal (with relation to the slope of the ceiling)

Just bought a new house a few weeks ago and am getting to experience the joy of swimming pool ownership for the first time. Today I visited Lowe’s three times, changed 150lbs of filter sand, sheered off a rusted out filter pressure gauge, and discovered epoxy putty.

I’m sure it’ll all be worth it when I can go for a swim, but it’s hard to remind myself of that after hour five or six of asking myself “why did I think this would be a quick project?”

Epoxy has come a long way in the last 20 yrs. Rule of thumbs - longer the cure time stronger it is, i.e. 5 minute Epoxy is garbage. Stuff that takes 24 hrs to cure is probably coming up on 4000 psi in adhesion. Anything made by West System is legit and aerospace / DoD quality.

This video looks like straight up Ron Popeil As Seen on TV scam but they are just being tongue in cheek, the shit is legit and bonding to roto-molded plastics is impressive as hell. You used to have to buy a Plastic Welding machine to do these kinds of repairs.

No. He wanted to cut them all the same length and roll i bet, on the bright side there aren't any butt seams.

Butt seam?

So it is abnormal? Tempted to wait for him to show up and tell him to pack his shit and never come back, rip it all down and do it myself (he is about half done).

It's going to bother me every time I look at it

Side of my house has a sunroom (built in the 80s, has a passive solar design) but today I noticed when it was raining water was dripping in at one of the corners. I believe the rubber that’s sealed to the glass panels outside is probably coming loose (see attached image). I’m going to try to get up there and just caulk it but if I can’t, what kind of person / company should I call to do it?
