Well I went ahead and picked this up. Fucking thing will start exactly once per day. First pull. If you shut it down to empty the bag or open the gate, you might as well quit for the day. Too bad, because the mower is slick; the engine is shit.

I took it back and went elsewhere and bought a Honda. That thing started first pull about 5 times today. Why the hell can't Briggs and Stratton do that?
That has been my exact experience with my pressure washer, also a Briggs and Stratton motor. I'll never buy another one again that is B&S.

I said Craftsman, but Noodlemower is correct, he did advise for the Honda.

My pressure washer actually crapped out mid-way through a job. I don't know the cause yet, but it just killed itself while in use. Didn't get leaner, run badly, or anything. I was pleased, because I got it started right up after a whole winter of sitting idle. Then, used for about an hour, and dead. I'm suspecting a clogged fuel filter or some such shit, but anyone have other ideas?

Hey man I said buy a Honda!!
You were right. I have a Champion Generator made in China with a clone of a Honda engine powering it. I run it once a month so that I know it will work when I need it. That thing with its plagiarized Honda engine will start on the first pull 95% of the time. I've never had to pull the cord more than twice. Fucking Briggs and Stratton. Why would a company as large as Toro stake its reputation on such a poorly designed engine?

You didn't run out of gas, did you? Try loosening the fuel cap. It should be vented but sometimes the little hole will clog and the tank becomes a vacuum and not allow fuel to flow.

To be fair my father has a craftsman mower with a B&S motor that's lasted about 30 years, starts on first or second pull every time. Obviously an older and possibly higher quality engine.

Good thoughts, but I've already had them. Plenty of fuel, vented fine (and removed cap). The sudden nature of this, and the persistent issue makes me think that there is a clog of something somewhere. Just have to find it.

And I just realised that my Craftsman mower has a B&G motor. Here's the difference, though, I think: primer. My pressure washer has no primer pump button, it's hard as fuck to start. My mower does, starts halfway through the first pull every time.

Who the fuck builds small motors of that sort without a primer pump?

B&S used to be reliable power that took forever to start, Honda used to be the start every time but underpowered for the price. Recent years it seems B&S just has slacked off, even Troy Bilt went to their own manufacturer because of QC issues not being worth the name recognition on the engine anymore (or rather, name recognition starting to hurt them). I don't get it, dad has B&S engines that are 20+ years old that are champs. Emissions regs maybe?

When it does it take the spark plug out and see if you are getting spark before you chase down a fuel problem. I had to replace the coil on a B&S engine last month on my parents mower. Would crank and run OK then as it warmed up if you killed it wouldn't start. Did this for a while then pretty much crapped out entirely. Just a thought, may not be coil but it's easy to elminate an ignition problem.

There's was an electric start and the warmer it got the slower it cranked. I'm assuming too much current was going thru the coil trying to get it spark causing a drain.

put out 1000lbs of much this weekend (25x40lb bags), after carrying them all over the yard to various flower beds, I can't hardly walk today. Fucked up my back pretty good. Nothing like the feeling of being shanked in the lower back with a rusty knife every time you sit or lay down. If only I could sleep standing up...

Wheel barrow and lots of breaks. I get about 30 bags of mulch every year and cart 3 of them in a wheel barrow to where they need to go at a time.

Man, I wish I could drive into my backyard. Stupid fence. My backyard is long and narrow (50 feet wide by 120 feet deep), and our biggest flower beds are of course in the very back. I have a wheelbarrow, but the yard was soft/muddy from recent rain and it left a huge divot through the yard the first time I used it with only 2 bags of mulch in it. So I ended up slinging them over my shoulders and carrying 2 at a time from my driveway to the back end of the backyard. Probably 150-175 ft of walking per trip with 80lbs of mulch on my shoulders(x 12 trips). Basically walked 1/3 of a mile with 80lbs extra on me. Bad, bad idea.

Dont you guys have mulch delivery by the yard in your neck of the woods? I usually get 5-7 yards delivered every 2 yrs and it works out great. Fuck the overpriced bags.

This is probably the stupidest question I'll ever ask. I have a patch in my yard that's like 6 feet long by 3 feet wide and a few inches deep where we had either erosion or water washed it away, so it's just this empty patch with some rocks in it. I'd like to fill it in and start growing grass in it. What do I fill it with? Do they sell bags of dirt at home depot I can put in? Is there special dirt I need?

I realize how dumb this sounds, but I've never filled in my yard before (fjust finished our first year of home ownership). Any tips?

Make sure you fix whatever drainage/erosion issues you have before filling and reseeding. Otherwise you'll just be back at square 1 in a few years.

Yeah, but I didn't want a giant pile of mulch in my driveway that I had to shovel into a wheelbarrow. Would have been a massive mess. And Wal-Mart had black mulch for sale for $1.88 per 40lb bag, so 1000 lbs of mulch only cost about $50, it wasn't too bad.
