These guys are making a huge mistake releasing this game right before Elden Ring. I'm sure it'll still sell well but I'm waiting for the discount. Also, it makes zero fucking sense they're pricing the ps5 version at $69 if you get a free upgrade anyways. What a fucking stupid way to sell a game.

They originally planned to not offer a free upgrade and faced a lot of backlash over it. That is why the pricing of the ps5 makes no sense now.

These are 2 different types of games. Releasing near each other isn't really a mistake.

Although I personally agree with you, in the fact that I have Elden Ring pre-ordered and I have not picked up this game for fear of lack of playing time.....I think for the lay public it's probably the other way around. I think as an IP HZD is bigger than Dark Souls stuff, so my feeling is that for most people, they will pick up H2:FW and not pick up Elden Ring because they will be too busy playing H2. Also Elden Ring should have been released already, it's the delay that caused both these games to release so close to each other.

I also agree with joz123 joz123 that they are 2 really different type of games that appeal to different markets, and it's only hard core gamers like those of us on this forum that really think about getting both.

I mean they're both big open world ARPGs with difficult combat and supposedly both have extensively story-driven narratives.

Granted, one can have that difficulty turned down to nothing while the other can't. And Elden Ring has multiplayer.

It's still hard to make the case that they're entirely divergent styles of games.

Hollywood does a lot of shuffling to make sure that big tent pole movies don't collide. The games industry needs to learn proper developmental scheduling and marketing to emulate this. There were many months last year where I was dying for something new and then we get these gluts periodically.

They generally release when games are done, or slightly before they're done actually (or way before they're done like NMS.) They need that revenue coming in the door immediately to move onto the next game. Developers are fucking expensive, and video game studios can fold easily, despite their high revenues.

Movie studios have the kind of stability that allows them to pay for shit over a long period of time. The financing of movies is an artform, and a particularly shady artform under the service. Our last secretary of the treasury Steven Mnuchin was a :emoji_nose:movie financier.:emoji_nose:

Forbidden west and elden ring are completely different games and when we say story driven, dark souls series style games are vastly different in story telling than what we will see between horizon and elden ring. Like it or not, horizon’s IP is much more well known at this point. Both games will be awesome. It’s a good problem to have.

Regardless, HZD sold 20 million compared to 1.5 million for the demon souls remake on ps5. Dark souls 3 cracked 10 million on all platforms combined. They are vastly different games. Horizon IP is infinitely more popular.

I dont believe it was ever supposed to be a launch title, it was targeted at holiday 21, and, as far as I know, never had any release date other than friday

Horizon is an IP vastly more known than from software titles. The sales mechanic Sony used here was definitely bullshit though.

Either way you cut it tons of people are in on Elden Ring and will not be paying $60 or $70 for this game and instead will wait for a discount. I don't really care which game is more popular. Only one of these games is exclusive as well. (if this game came out a month earlier or later it's 100% a full price buy for me)

No fucking way, I barely have enough time to game at all right now so it's Elden Ring or bust :p

I am 100% buying this shit, but at this point it's not going to be until its on sale.

Can't really blame them for Elden Ring pushing their release date by a month. They didn't have a release date when Elden Ring said they were releasing in January back in June 2021. Horizon made their announcement in August. Probably had the same idea. Open world ARPG, let's give a little window here for about a month after it since Horizon can't compete with Elden Ring hype and we don't want to be just before Elden Ring since people will drop our game immediately (especially streamers) the second Elden Ring is out. So we release it 3 weeks after Elden Ring.

When the devs/marketing got the call that Elden Ring pushed back their game to one week after Horizon it was probably similar to

Yeah this looks superb, and I'm stoked to play it this year (GOW 2 as well), but no game would delay me from jumping into what looks to be the greatest game ever made next Friday. GTA 6, Bully 2, GOW 2 I don't give a fuck. It's Elden Ring or bust, all this other shit is white noise.

That said, this will be the first reason to justify owning a PS5, so it's got that going for it and I reckon it'll sell a fuck load of copies.
