I'm letting you guys be my deciding factor whether i watch this silliness or not. i do like me some beheadings and dragons as much as everyone else here. i just dont understand why the need to insert woke and american politics into something from a different planet at some different time in history.
Just going off the first episode, the actual
show doesn't even seem to be particularly woke or Americanized, it's just the dumbasses running it who seem intent on inserting their own bullshit as though they feel the need to go on preemptive virtue signaling mode like this was a Netflix production.
- Corlys, a.k.a the show's own entry in the definition of a token character, does a perfectly fine job and fits in despite the showrunners flat out describing the casting choices as such. The only criticism I might have with what little fleshing out they have right now would be towards the writing, because he doesn't particularly strike me as
this character going by the wiki entry. And again, that's criticizing the writers and maybe the casting director if the actor couldn't play that specific role, but he still does his role well and made a good impression.
- The Roe V. Wade commentary is pulled straight from their asses just to virtue signal, and really only shows how clueless they are because the situation in the show might as well be the exact opposite to abortion since they're actively trying to give birth. Bodily autonomy, technically, but you could say that about most things
- No real "girl power/slay kween," at least not
yet, but seeing as how this is a prequel and we already know how things end, it's really hard to say just how much they could shove in without it looking ridiculous. It's the whole, "where are the black hobbits, Gandalf?" all over again, but unlike Lord of the Rings where the rights are so fractured and murky that Rings can easily be disregarded as Bezo's multi-billion dollar fanfic project, HotD is supposed to be a direct prequel to another HBO show. Seguing from that, they also apparently never got the memo that tHe LoNg NiGhT was a joke since the very first episode actually references that business, so again, we'll just have to see how silly they can get in the show itself.
I've only seen the first episode, and
jayrebb
might be on the mark that this needed a two episode start to really hook people, which if it turns out to be the case might just be a reflection on some bad choices for how the first episode went. It's nothing insulting at least, no references to zootopia porn or forcing a blackmail pun, and thankfully GoT doesn't have elves or dwarves to fuck up.
My own guess is that HotD will suffer more from post-show commentary by the showrunners, writers, and actors, but not as much will leak into the show itself unlike a lot of shows these days where it's really the worst of both. After how much GoT soured everyone's opinion of the source, they would have benefited from just learning how to simply shut the hell up and stop trying to sour the opinion of anyone who doesn't exist in their twitter hivemind before their new show is entirely out yet.
