Anyone have thoughts on Texas Instruments Incorporated (TXN). Looking at them as an IoT play they have a fair amount of vertical integration up the stack. They also make some of the equipment that is used by other companies to fabricate chips and sensors. I'm also long SSNI and STM. I see STM being a buyout target for someone like GE if they continue on their current upward trend

Would have been a nice couple years if she just had the SPY (SPDR S&P 500 ETF ) I don't know if dumping all at once is a good idea, but you could dollar cost average the other funds into the S&P with an autotransaction to happen every week. I assume your wife is late 30s and has +20 yr time horizon on this money. Does her IRA have the availability of a vanguard target retirement fund? That way it will auto adjust bond/equity mix as she gets older without having to fiddle with it.

While I'm always a huge fan of Vanguard funds, if you do as Blazin says, double check what the IRA management fees are. Vanguard is great until you notice that the management company has tacked on a 1.5% management fee and instead of paying .15%, you're now paying 1.65%.

Wife is 30. Look for a 2050 ret fund and put in like 50%?

This is in an ameritrade account, does that mean we don't have to worry about the fees you're talking about?

For some reason I was thinking 401k for the management company, and not IRA.

Are you basically invested in all of those funds through Ameritrade? And if so, how did she end up in such a broad variety?

If I were you, I'd contact Vanguard and have them transfer all of it. There's no reason for an IRA to be invested in so much random shit.

As for target date funds, I'm personally not a fan. They weight too heavily to bonds, which in turn drastically reduce your returns. For a 20-30+ year portfolio, there's no reason to have bonds at all, to be honest.

That doesn't mean you can't use them just pick a date further out than your actual retirement date.

To Picasso Ameritrade has some funky mutual fund/ETF fules. You certainly don't want to dollar cost average all that if you are getting hit with any kind of transaction fee. Personally, I know it's a hassle but I would have the account moved to Vanguard.

Blazin Blazin all my retirement is through TSP from the government. How hard is to get that into something I could control more without taking a tax hit? Am I moron for wanting to do that instead of keeping it in my TSP account?

My brother works for DoD so I assume the plan he had me go over is probably the same as what you are in, and no I don't recommend leaving it or trying to switch to something more active rather than passive index. The federal plan has a great S&P index option at an expense ratio comparable to vanguard.

IMO if you are interested in more active investing then either do that an in IRA or non retirement account.

Her mom fancies herself a trader so she bought all this stuff.

I will have to read more to know what Blazin is talking about. Do i get my trades for free at vanguard? All my stuff is td ameritrade too so I liked having it all in one place.

I'm not looking for any setup i have to manage closely, is dollar cost average a set it and forget it setup or will i be screaming into a red phone all day?

I'd stick with it we can review which of the funds you are invested inside the tsp. Govt has improved the choices dramatically but even so there are some with high fees and investment choices that are certainly sub optimal. The s&p index one i forget the fund letter is the one you want to be in with all if not most of your funds . But if you are looking at 55 retirement just need to start toning down some risk as you age.

If you want to trade stocks I'd set up an ira or even a non retirement account with td Ameritrade

There is a caveat a charge per fund or something and it has to do with selling to. I'd have to look at the fine print again but I know I moved my wife's retirement from td the moment I fully read the details

You were saying to slowly transition from all that shit into the SPY or something similar so that I wouldn't be all bought in at once price?

With the market at all time highs just makes me more cautious to move it all at once. If you do over time (called dollar cost averaging) then it takes advantage of pullbacks we may see over the next year.

I don't know the amounts however. If one of them has say $500 in it I would t spread that out over a year that would be silly .

I would do over a year and weekly but transfers of st least $50 increments per fund. So some may finish faster than others,
