Having living expense money in an account is dicey. If something goes really wrong , accounts can be frozen for long periods of time or even garnished. Even if you have to account for "excess" money vs living expenses in a court. Fuck em , tell them you spent it on beer and strippers. As opposed to some easily convertible to cash items.

Bought into the Canadian uranium sector earlier in the week, thinking once Japan starts putting its power plants back online the prices should rise.

Is anyone into ETFs here? Wondering if there are any potentially "hot" ones for 2014.

I opened a Vanguard account nearly two years ago and have been pumping funds into their VTI (Total Stock Market ETF). Needless to say, 2013 was pretty good.

What percentage gains are we talking about for 2013? Just curious. My only investments are through my 401k (Vanguard), but I still pulled off a 25.3% for 2013 with a 85 stock / 15 bond ratio.

VTSAX was like 29% (its a total stock market index fund) and VGHAX was like 42%.

My money's all in index ETFs, a split between iShares for their Canadian equity and bond funds, and Vanguard for US/international stuff. My return was 22.03% in 2013, at about 95% equities. Dragged down a bit by the slower Canadian markets, which are about 40% of my portfolio. My returns were also goosed a bit upwards by the decline of the Canadian dollar relative to USD.

Yeah, mine is all in indexes as well. The majority with Fidelity in their Spartan funds. I had just under 30% for 2013 and that was slightly hampered by my international index fund. It was a good year all around. I don't expect too many like it.

What do you make per hour?
How many hours per week do you put into your "job"?
How much money did you need before you could live off your investments?

I have a unique situation and could use investment advice. I'm a law enforcement officer with a take home car. I live in an area below my means but they let me live here for free. I currently have two student loans (private) approximately 11K at 5% and 15K at 2%, as well as a car loan 12K at 3%. My minimum payments on my student loans combined is 223 but I pay 350 monthly. After over time work and living expenses, I bank between 1500 and 2000 a month. I currently have 8K sitting in the bank. I'm undecided if I should 1. invest it. 2. Pay into loans. 3. Keep saving for a house. 4. Use the money as a down payment on an investment property. Renting it out while still living rent free. I'm open to opinions.

I've never calculated it per hour, lol. I run a fund that invests other peoples' money, so it's a full time job. Even when the market isn't open, there's work to be done. Research, meetings, etc.

How much you need to have before you live off your investments is entirely dependent upon your lifestyle and investment choices =P

Whats your strategy for taking gains off of prior stock market investments?
I try not to sell, ever. I have stock in companies that I've owned for a long time. Sometimes, the story changes and I'm forced to sell because I no longer like what's happening or the mgmt choices etc.

Other "investments" are more trades for me, based on ideas other than the fundamental story of the company. In these cases, I have targets in mind based on technicals or option data, etc. In the case of a losing trade, I'll get stopped out.
