Also if getting an internship is the bar to entering the industry then just apply for internships.

Also check out /r/learnprogramming or /r/programming on reddit. Most of it is shit, but there are people that get jobs without college degrees on there.

Addendum to the last: These types also push their projects to Github. If you can't show a degree, you need to show work. As you feel you get more experience, and if you're still looking, make sure and apply new knowledge to old projects.

The biggest liability with junior team members is "can they work in a team?." Not "coding skill."

Open Source is great if you can show you worked with others while contributing. If you just submit random PULL requests it doesn't show much.
50% of being a Developer is not coding.

And then be functionally useless because while you know the syntax and a few general basics you don't know shit.
Like 80%+ of all programming jobs don't require you to program in a language that doesn't manage your code

-edit-

I may have misunderstand what you were talking about. I actually do agree that knowing how to code is only a facet of being a software developer. This isn't the 90's anymore where you just put a programmer in a closet and hope you get fully tested fully functional code.

You know what sucks?

I am the exception here.

I work alone on the code, I code review my own stuff, and when it fails people go "but why didn't you pick that up?"

Fuck this job

Giant red flag.

EDIT: let me be clear, I'm not judging you. I understand there's literally no one else to do it. But if they won't get you someone else to review code, that's the red flag. 99.99% of programmers need their code reviewed.

Client I am working for as part of my side consulting job had some "flash of genius" moment this last week while sitting on the crapper or something. Anyway, he wants an iOS Google Maps app to do... something. But is looking to make a prototype relatively quickly. I imagine within 3 weeks/month. As I am working on this main project for him and I really don't know shit about mobile development or the time to obsess over it and learn. Any of my Rerolled bros interested in such a thing? Pay rate is negotiable with him. I don't set it at all beyond my own personal rate. But you can probably expect 75+ an hour for this project at minimum I would guess.

PM me if interested!

So you want someone to help you make an app that does something in 3 weeks

Something

they wanted me to have my mentor code review my stuff but he doesn't understand what I'm even doing

Man I'm not really well versed in somethings or iOS but I'm pretty sure I can copy pasta an app that does something for that price.

I honestly don't know his requirements. All I know is that it will

1. Use Google Maps API
2. Objective C
3. Will place markers on Google Maps based upon some criteria he will discuss with you.
4. Relatively short timeline (1 month or less is a guess, but an educated one).

I will not be working on it with you. I am doing other shit for him.

Objective C might be a problem, at least here. I can't remember anyone mentioning they work in that language. I didn't even know it existed until I started my current job a couple years ago.

Correction. Language can be HTML5 in place of Obj C. Along with CSS and JavaScript or something to make it work.

I'm familiar with Hybrid development of IOS, basically it is a cordoba wrapper of a web page. If that sounds good to him. Give him my info.

Don't pay attention to Vinen.

Learn C#, its an easy to learn and there are lots of jobs for junior level programming.

Take it from me. I make a seven figures salary as a c# developer.
What do you do that you make a million USD a year developing C# code?
