I'm using a historical standard and it is a narrow standard because it is the only valid one. The standards you want to apply, as I've shown, are entirely subjective and therefore not worthy of merit in any way. By your logic every state is a Southern State because the rural areas are poor and retarded and have bad educations and the vast majority of states benefitted directly from slavery for some period of time.

The ONLY non subjective standard is the historical metric. You've been given numerous opportunities to find a non subjective standard but none of them are useful to classifying what an actual southern state is because you can use those standards to define literally any state as southern. Fucking Maine is a southern state by your metric. Alaska too.

You two are the history majors.

What groups settled kentucky appalacia, predominately? For NC appalachia it was mostly the irish and pseudo-irish. The Welsh and the Scots and the Scots-Irish... you know, any poor fuck that the English assholes decided needed to be exported.

That's probably where it stems from, the initial settlement waves.

Or maybe not, but that's my guess.

I think Hodj is an anthropology major. He is a lesser species.

Anthropologists dig out the facts.

Historians distort them for their political agendas.

Anne Marshall demonstrates in her book, using historical facts and data, that Kentucky became a Southern state after the Civil War.
This is a contradictory premise on its face. You can't become a "Southern state" after the war ended and the South no longer existed. This goes back to that debate we had with Grim1 the other night about whether something can exist and can not exist at the same time.

"Southern" doesnt mean fought for the Confederacy, though its a large part of it. You're being willfully obtuse. And you know it.

Mostly germanic and irish and scottish. Bluegrass music is a good example of the Irish-Scotch background.

A lot of our population also came from pre existing European populations in Pennsylvania, as Kentucky was discovered and all that free land opened up, a lot of Pennsylvanians looking for new opportunities came down and settled the area.

Only because, once again, the definition has been stretched beyond all real meaning to make it as subjective as possible to use it as a pejorative. Once you've stretched a definition so far, like a rubber band, it either loses all usefulness or breaks, and in both cases, is worthless as an entity. Southern must mean fought for the South in the context of American history, otherwise you can put pretty much every state in the Southern column. New York had slavery, benefitted from it, and when you leave the major metropolitan area, the whole state is full of racist rednecks.

Subjectivity has no place in this debate. Hard cold historical fact is the only metric which can apply.

Southern means the overall Southern culture that was promulgated through those areas in the 1800s. Its not just about slavery and who wore what uniform in those 4 years of Civil War.

Cultural arguments, again, are too subjective. What southern culture? As if the entire monolith of the south, all several hundred million square miles of territory plus, had one homogenous culture? You can't even find homogenous culture inside one city, much less across entire swaths of a continent bro. If Kentucky is southern solely because it shares some aspects of southern culture, then why wouldn't it be midwestern for sharing a similar amount of aspects of mid western culture? Because you want to cherry pick the cultural traits you are measuring in order to justify a false classification.

This argument you are making is cultural phrenology, cherry picking details in order to justify a classification system that, once explored in depth, is proven to be mostly subjective, and not actually applicable to the populations being examined.
