everything south of I-80 in IL is basically Kentucky.

Even the governors wont live in Springfield, in the governor's mansion. They all live in Chicago and fly in a private plane to the state capitol once a week

Right, I think I said something similar about south eastern Kentucky being basically Tennessee at some point as well.

Kentucky passed a DOMA amendment to its state Constitution back in the late 90s I think it was, but the local city governments of Lexington and Louisville have mandated all sorts of protections and benefits extensions to partners of same sex couples.

And the trend tends to be that after Lex and Louisville adopt measures like this, the rest of the state follows over time. Lexington was the first city to pass anti smoking ordinances and most of the rest of the state has followed suit in the decade after.

I never said Kentucky was more progressive than the most progressive states, which are the ones who have done things like pass gay marriage acts and pro marijuana ordinances and whatnot, but it is more progressive than you give it credit for.

And like 36 other states haven't passed gay marriage acts either, including North Eastern and Mid Western states so yeah. Not a metric by which one can judge how northern or southern a state is.

LGBT rights in Kentucky - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Like a number of Southern states in the U.S., Kentucky has generally been seen as one of the most socially conservative states, with recent polls indicating that only 27 percent of Kentuckians support same-sex marriage, making it the third least supportive state behind Mississippi and West Virginia.[1]

Oh hey look at that, kentucky is considered a southern state

and apparently is included in the definition of The South by US Census Bureau

and kentucky is included in the definition of dixie

Yes, the debate is that that designation is wrong and unfair, ignoring history in favor of a lie.

Until you can prove we're a Southern City by historical metrics, it doesn't matter how its classified otherwise.

Only about 30% of the Kentucky population supported smoking bans, yet they exist across almost the entire state now.

Where Louisville and Lexington lead, the state follows.

Yes, Hodj. Everyone is lying, only you know the real ultimate truth, Lumie. I mean, Hodj. Sorry.

Present scholarly work and he accuses of "appeal to authority". Present common opinion on a subjective label, he accuses you of "appeal to popularity".

One assistant professor's opinions in a book that wasn't peer reviewed isn't scholarly work.

No one is ignoring history. You are ignoring present day facts.
No, they're ignoring history. They insist Kentucky was a Southern state, in order to pretend that we were a heavily slave owning plantation state who fought on the side of the Confederates. This narrative is directly contradicted by historical fact. The systemic prejudice against this state is palpable, and continuing to allow the lies about how history to persist and then using those as justification for misclassifying us as a Southern state rather than a Midwestern or Northern state is a crime against every member of this state. Good, hard working people who just wake up in the morning, go to work, do their jobs, raise their kids and want to be respected as equal citizens in this grand experiment we call the United States of America.

We'll not stand for it!

bro, you're using an extremely narrow definition to specifically avoid tackling the larger question here.

The South doesnt just mean who fought for confederacy and who didnt. The South as a larger term for all kinds of other things. Social mores, cuisine, lifestyle, traditions, culture. Kentucky certainly has more in common with the South than the Midwest. This is fact. Furthermore, Marshall's book is well researched and cited and it explains how Kentucky embraced the Confederate ideals and notions even after the Civil War.

Stop frontin' bro. You live in the South. It's cool, the Council of the Shaw cares not from whence you came.
