Backyard Chickens Abandoned After Owners Lose Interest, Advocates Warn

Backyard chicken farming has grown in popularity in recent years, as more urban residents turn to gardening and farming. But along with a rise in rooftop chicken coops has come the problem of unwanted and abandoned birds.

Hundreds of chickens that outlive their egg-laying potential are being abandoned at shelters across the country, reports NBC News. "They're dumped all the time," Farm Sanctuary's Susie Coston told the site.

Farm Sanctuary's three shelters currently take in at least 400 or 500 chickens annually, Coston estimated. According to NBC News, another shelter in Minnesota "has tracked a steady climb in surrendered birds from fewer than 50 in 2001 to nearly 500 in 2012."

Animal rescue organizations often can't handle the influx of unwanted chickens, leaving "municipal dog and cat shelters the task of taking in, housing, feeding, caring for, and inevitably killing healthy, adoptable chickens," according to a statement from Farm Sanctuary and five other organizations.

Chickens, which can live well over 10 years, require consistent care and have their own personalities.

With the proper research and dedication, raising chickens can be a worthwhile alternative to purchasing eggs from factory farms, suggests the Humane Society of the United States. The organization recommends adopting adult chickens from shelters or retired hens from farms.

Along with the animals' welfare, municipal regulations and sanitation are important considerations when adopting. Experts have warned that backyard poultry could become disease vectors for avian flu if the disease evolves to infect humans.

The Centers for Disease Control notes it is common for chickens and other live poultry to carry salmonella. The CDC recommends washing your hands after coming into contact with chickens, and keeping them away from children, older adults or those with weakened immune systems.
Fucking hippies.

my house does not have wheels
My house had wheels when I was working on my undergrad. Shit was hella cheap, 200 a month rent and more space than an apartment. The trailer itself was like $2000, saved so much money on rent during that time. Finally had to move out when my neighbor burned down two other trailers over some feud. Their friends started talking about burning down his trailer in retaliation and I was like "oshi time to move before some redneck burns my shit down by mistake".

The very few trailer parks left anywhere in my area are outright slums, but most of them have been torn down and replaced with apartments. The ghettos too. Like we used to have a pretty strong ghetto on the north side of town whose name escapes me but everyone was forced out and it was torn down and replaced with affordable apartments that are pretty nice actually.

We don't have a lot of trailer parks around here. We have them here and there but what we have more commonly are stretches with trailers sitting on an acre or two acres of land. I guess what we have are trailer subdivisions.

Back in like the 80s I can remember there seeming like there were more trailer parks around here. But Lexington has really expanded its suburbs over the past two decades, and a lot of the places I remember being trailer parks have been flat out torn down and replaced with houses. Because housing here is CHEAP. Or was, for decades land here was cheap.

Now, what people do do, not very often but it is heard of, is purchase a good, new trailer, like a double wide, plant it on a plot of land, and then expand around it. I don't know why they do that but they do.

Yeah, I've seen them do it around here too. I'm not exactly sure why. I really don't think they're doing it because they're idiots. I assume that the people doing that have something that keeps them from getting a mortgage.

There's probably that really shitty spot to be in where the bank has no interest whatsoever in making you a 20 or 30 year loan for $250,000 -- but they're perfectly willing to make you a 5 or 10 year loan for 50. And once you take that first deal you're kinda locked in.

Probably something along those lines, don't want to or can't get a loan for the property but have enough money to buy it and put a trailer on it and will invest in it slowly.
