Which Asus or MSI gaming laptop would you guys go for with a budget of 1500$? Trying to help my brother in law make the right decision. Purely for gaming, won't be travelling that much, so weight is not an issue.
Kinda late for suggestions, but I would check out XoticPC.com , I bought a laptop from them, and have been very happy with it. Seems over whelming at first, because of so many options, but have been very happy with the gaming laptop I got from them for just under $1500.

I have an Asus G-series, and while it was fairly awesome for games there were a lot of mistakes made when they built these things. They didn't properly insulate the touch pad, so it started failing on something like 66% of all their laptops, their keyboard buffer is too small so you get "missed keys" almost every few words, they did a real shitty job of applying thermal paste to the gpu/cpu, and I've had to replace the DC jack twice now.

I'd probably try MSI next, no suggestions though :\

I've had a Asus G73 for a few years now. It's pretty great all around as far as my usage. Mine is a refurb and I haven't experienced any of the problems Noodle mentioned except the thermal paste. I actually finally just repasted it last week and my idle temps dropped by 20 degrees. No failed parts to speak of on mine otherwise.

Looking for suggestions on anultrabook(or anything with a very slim profile)and Windows based. It's got to handle the following fairly well:

?Photoshop CS6+
?SketchUp PRO
?Audacity
?Possibly Blender

I won't be gaming on it so it doesn't need to be enthusiast level but would like to get as much life as possible out of it, maybe 5+ years. My price limit would be $1000 but I'm willing to go over if it's the right specs.

Any suggestions?

Anyone have any experience with the MSI GS Ghost series? It's got a thin form factor I'm looking for but not sure on MSI.

The ghost series has a better dual fan cooling system. I have one of their MSI GT series from 2 years back and it has their single bigger fan. Thing is loud as fuck. I played with the ghost at Frys and it seems way quieter at idle and cool to the touch.

You could just install ubuntu on them. Can't fault the yellow man for wanting what Google, Microsoft and Apple already know about you. Well you could, but it would not make you incognito or less marketed to.

Superfish directly injects code into each page your browser loads. It creates a "man in the middle" between you and whatever web resource you are accessing. This is different from google and MS and apple keeping track of what you do on their own servers. This shit allows for malicious software to be injected between you and what you are accessing and opens your system up for all types of fuckery. This also comes pre installed on your lenovo laptop, together with certificates and the whole nine yards of bullshit.

I hope someone who understands security better can chime in and explain it in a non retarded way (my way).

The government has already banned China-based Lenovo servers from being installed in critical US infrastructures (banking, government work, etc) after some terrible backdoor were discovered - now this.

The company does some real shady shit.

Essentially these certificates are trusted at the highest level (Microsoft level trust). If you have the private key to these certificates you can forge security on websites like banking, shopping, etc. Can also trick your system into accepting malware.

I was wondering why my company stopped offering Lenovo as a choice for work issued laptops about 6 months ago. Thinking this is the reason. Quite disapointing

Was well put with regards to windows, serious business. Reinstall. Install another OS. Problem solved? Or is it hardware based?

No, reformatting would fix it as far as i understand. However installing windows isnt exactly simple due to drivers needed. This is for laptops after all. Besides..why the fuck should i have to do that when i purchase a product?

You need a new copy of windows for it. Lenovo uses a recovery partition which I am sure is baked in. It's also a pain in the ass as wormie said do to drivers.

Just received my new Dell XPS 13. It won CES 2015 and I have to say, it is sleek as shit. Very small form factor, tiny bezel makes the screen look larger than it is and just clean form and function. The one big downside I think is the web cam placement at the lower left of the screen. I look like a complete jackass on Skype looking at the bottom of my chin and up my nose. Who thought this was a good idea? Otherwise a 9 / 10 for me.

XPS 13 Laptop with infinity display | Dell

Got mine with the i5, non-touchscreen, 256GB M2 ssd, 8GB memory right at around $1100.
