Called up one of the lawyers I found online that said they did free consultations and the person who answers the phone says they don't do free consultations, lol. Not gonna hire a lawyer and pay them a ton of money just to find out I still have to go to NC, tho, so I guess i'm just gonna set up a court date and take a bus out there (plane tickets are like $300 wtf).

I said this before. Contact legal aid or the public defenders office in that county. Tell them you cant afford to hire a lawyer. Their job is to defend people who can't afford lawyers. Make a phone call. It cant hurt. Perhaps they can pre-arrange a surrender and have a deal already set in place for you.

you can still get a public lawyer at any point i think. i know i got mine wayyyyyyyyyyy late in the process back when i had to go through my shit.

Emailed a different lawyer today and got a super fast response saying they could get the order for arrest recalled and probably get the case dismissed for $1500 which seems pretty decent.

I'd get the engagement letter drafted and look at it to see what exactly you are hiring them to do. Don't get ripped off.

Is that something I would need a physical copy of, like a receipt, for before or when I would pay them?

Edit: Asked him about it and he said for minor criminal things it's memorialized in the e-mail chain we're sending as far as fees/representation/etc.

I've had a law firm take care of a couple outstanding tickets/warrants for me exclusively through email. If you're wanting to keep costs down then I think that's how they do it now. Just look up reviews for the firm on Google first. If they are completely shady it should come up.

1. Get a fee agreement that delineates exactly what you are paying for and how (flat fee, hourly, when the fee is earned, etc)

2. Check with your State Bar or Supreme Court to find out if the attorney you are hiring has any public discipline

OK so buddy of mine lives in a big appt complex (fairly new building like 8 years old), little over 2 weeks ago sprinkler system exploded and everyone got kicked out. He is staying with family like 30 minutes away until stuff shakes out. Leasing company won't let them live in the building (I'm sure there's legal issues with sprinklers and water damage) anyway they had no ETA on repairs, damage to one part of the building is extensive. Found out he's still not able to go back today and still no ETA.

Long story short, they won't let him retrieve belongings outside of certain appointments (which aren't ever available) and they have secured the entry doors to not work with resident fobs. They offered 1 week of hotel for 'disruption', which he didn't use, so it's not clear if they are housing everyone and just missed communicating to certain residents or not. They are expecting full rent payments and sent an email to say that the lease specifies building condition. Seems to me I wouldn't be paying jack shit for an uninhabitable building, sounds very sketch to me. Anyway I've been asking if he found an attorney yet. He hasn't looked.

Am I crazy? First thing I would be doing is finding a lawyer to stick up their ass if they were doing this to me. Only exception is if they were doing nothing but accommodating everyone completely above and beyond the bare minimum, which they clearly aren't.

Yea its really suspicious to me because they are a huge leasing company so you'd figure they'd be on the level with this type of stuff.

I have rentals in Oklahoma, a very red state, and if your renters cannot occupy the building you must reimburse them for reasonable accommodations. If you do not then they are allowed to keep receipts and deduct it from rent.
