The #fartrape pic in the FSR got me pondering for some reason. What do I teach my girls about feminism? Obviously I want them to have positive role models and self esteem, and understand the world for what it really is and the choices/sacrifices they will be faced with. But jesus christ if I have to listen to this bullshit about the patriarchy and rape culture here in a few years, I just don't know. That is such a tough row, you want to expose them to these ideas but there are these extremists who make the whole thing look like a sham. Same for anything, i guess.

Sure, kids do weird shit, absolutely. Louis C.K. has a joke about his daughter pertaining to the subject. However, the amount of detail Dunham describes her antics with? There's no fucking way she was only 7 when it occurred (there's no way she'd have the cognitive function to be able to understand the gravity of what she was doing. So, it'd be nearly impossible for her to recall it in such vivid detail). In which case, it's most assuredly sexual abuse.

If you want some advice from a guy with no kids (so talking out of my ass) then read on.

What was important to my upbringing, in retrospect, was how I was taught by my father especially (for all his other faults) that nopersonhad a right to lay their hands on any otherpersonwithout their permission, gender didn't even factor into it. Being the oldest I was equally punished as a child for picking on my brother or sister, and was taught just as much as my sister was that no one had a right to hurt me.

The key to this, also in retrospect, was that I was often reminded just how lucky I was (upper middle class) while simultaneously being taught that I wasn't special, I didn't deserve to have anything handed to me, and that if I wanted something I had to work for it. My parents gave me a very long leash, I pretty much roamed the neighborhood and did whatever I wanted to. It is important to give your girls the same leash length you would give a boy, it is fairly well documented that girls are more naturally "protected" as children because we culturally see them as more vulnerable than boys. Granting as much autonomy from as early an age as you can stand is probably the most important you can do for any of your children.

I think all you need to do is teach your girls to be confident and self-reliant by demonstrating those traits (i.e. trust them to make their own mistakes and learn from them), and to not gender social conditioning. For example the lesson is "we don't hit people" instead of "We don't hit girls" thereby showing that all people are equal rather than just telling them.

She is clearly filling in her memory with fiction, just like everyone else does. If the sister was 1 she was absolutely 7, you can confirm that with elementary school math. I know she's insufferable, but come on.

Obviously. I'm saying that she's likely flubbing the ages at which this occurred. I don't think she was 7 and I don't think her sister was 1. By making it an age low enough to be "innocent", she thought she could write something that was fairly disturbing, but "edgy" and "safe", because "kids will be kids! hurr durr!". Even if itisjust a case of "filling in the details", I find that pretty fucking sickening/disgusting.

I find sexual coercion between a teen and a child deeply disturbing, and behaviour that would require immediate correction if identified. I also find sexual contact between children of vastly differing ages and maturity level extremely troubling. I'm not alone on this.

Did you not read the part where she would bribe her sister with candy for long kisses on the mouth? Manipulating her into laying on top of her, or sharing a bed? That's the most disturbing part of the whole thing for me. These are known tactics employed in exploitative situations. A parent allowing it to happen/continue is absolutely shocking.
