I started a different series before seeing the comment about Overgeared, but I did download it to my Kindle.

While doing so I saw a solitary 1* review that said something like, "The author is racist towards Japanese and Chinese."

Peter Parker, Harry you don't need to sell me on it, I was already going to read it.meme

Unfortunately I had already started another series before I saw the news about Overgeared.

Completely meh. Not bad at all, but nothing new or exciting either. It is like Defiance of the Fall-lite and Primal Hunter-lite with skills, titles, etc. It even has the Dao, except fortunately so far he's only spent a few pages on that bullshit. Most notable thing is his penchant for tossing pop culture/memes into the story. Like, he encounters some monkeys in the dungeon that are called gymonkeys and they all flex and work out all the time. Their "elites" are called brorillas and they guide the lesser gymonkeys in working out, nodding in respect to each other like bros, etc. And the leader, the big brorilla, the main character names Harambe. Amusing, but certainly not enough to make you have to read it. 2.5/5

I started book 2 of it, but I'm already really not thrilled with the direction it is heading. And it seems there is already a 4th book on the way, so it could be yet another endless series. Furthermore, he has a couple of other series, but this is his newest, so if those are the same or worse I wouldn't even bother unless they are drastically different.

Oh, and for those keeping track, yet another Strong Black Woman love interest. I guess you can't be attracted to anything else these days.

You know what, typing this I've decided I'm not going to waste my time on it. It's just mediocre, and literally nothing I haven't read before unless I care about memes (which to be fair, I do!), so why bother? Overgeared it is!

Like I said, the early chapters weren't great. But they get the ball rolling. The story really comes into it's own shortly after that. Judging by the title, I assume book 1 is the training wheels portion where grid is weak and extremely jealous of everyone. Book 2 is when the real story begins.

Don't worry, I'll give it a chance. It is highly recommended, not just here.

Although I guess that doesn't mean as much as it used to, since literally every fucking one of these shitty ones I've hated on is like a 4.something rating on Goodreads.

But still, I will at least finish 2 or 3 before deciding if I hate you or not!

Yeah, I dropped that one for pretty much those reasons

I finished the first overgeared book, and it may be the worst shit I have ever actually finished. I’ve lost faith in everyone who recommended it.

Xarpolis prepared me, so I'll definitely keep going through a second book, but the first few chapters of Overgeared are godawful. I know it is translated, and it suffers from stuff not sounding the same in English compared to its native language, but I've read others like that, Reality Benders, Apocalypse Tamer, that were tolerable in that respect so I can handle stilted language and weird phrasing, etc.

But for the love of Christ, someone please tell me that he stops with shit like, and I quote, "Puhahahahat!!" and "Ohu~" and "Huhuhu." Because I'mma be real here, if that continues I don't care if the book literally performs fellatio on me, that shit is going to piss me off every time I see it.

Are those supposed to be laughter? Out of breath? Is he having a seizure? I hate when authors actually type out anything beyond haha. Just say something like, Grid laughed hysterically. I'm sufficiently capable of imagining what that sounds like without having it sounded out in jibberish for me.

None of that stopped in the first book. Add in the awful characters all around (I use the term characters loosely, they are written about how I would expect a retarded 5th grader to write characters), the absolute cringe dialogue and internal monologue, the bland and generic world, and a game system that is whatever the author wants at any given time, and you have whatever the fuck this waste of time is.

To be fair that describes most litrpgs.
To a varying degree, and this was one of the worst cases. Well, most that are that bad I drop within the first few chapters but the series is popular enough for some reason that I figured I’d give it a full book.

It does. That's very early in, but it goes away fast. To be honest, I didn't even remember that it used to be that type of thing in the chapters.

So, 70% of the way through the first Overgeared book. Really struggling to even want to read it, unlike most litrpgs where it is at least somewhat interesting.

Are all Asians like in this book? I get that there are cultural differences that make things seem different to us, but holy fuck, how do any Asian countries succeed if a significant portion of their people are as depicted here? I'm not even talking about the main character, I mean all the surrounding ones that act completely fucking stupid, and are written so badly that I have to hope no one actually acts like them.

The main character himself is likely functionally retarded, and perhaps one of the most unlikable characters I have ever read. I just watched him beat some RL bullies (in game) for hours while they were trapped in spider webs. He's jealous, greedy, lies constantly, and never accepts responsibility for his own actions. This is one time where he should have been gender swapped, because he acts like a total bitch, literally.

I understand that *supposedly* he grows as a character and becomes a lot more likable and the writing improves, but my question is, how did anyone ever find that out? If I didn't have people saying it gets better, I would have quit long ago and never would have made it to these supposed better future chapters. Unless someone just started reading at Book 4 or something, how does anyone put up with this utter garbage to get there?

Oh, and the motherfucking stat/description dumps, my god. Do I need to see EVERY word of his stat screen and item descriptions dozens of times?? Fuck me. I can only picture the author copy/pasting two pages worth of the same info and smiling about how they've filled part of the chapter so easily, while also probably touching himself over how clever he is.

This is getting a 1* from me on Goodreads no matter what happens the rest of the book. I will read book 2, but if it doesn't get substantially better I'm out. Holy fuck, how did this survive these chapters??

I am almost through book two now and I don't think I'll be reading book three.

Too much dumb shit just keeps getting piled on and Youngwoo's improvement sucks dick. He's a shitbird with not a single good trait at all. His family was right to be pissed off at him. He then won the lottery and somewhat tries to be nicer to people because of it. I don't get what kind of character growth someone is supposed to have when everything he has was pure luck and nothing more.

Finally finished the first book. It was just as horrible all the way through.

After your comment and others, I decided to go to Wuxiaworld and read some snippets of later chapters (you can only read a few paragraphs without logging in) to see if things improved. It might have, marginally, but not enough for me to care. Maybe I'll miss out on some truly amazing shit later on, but I kinda doubt it. I'm out, that was a fucking struggle just to finish the one book. And the ending wasn't even anything good, just a "we need a place to stop, here is a good length for a book."

I did also find out the interesting tidbit that the translator fucked up and found out too late that the name really was supposed to be Greed, not Grid. Something about how Korean is translated and the two words were variations of the same meaning or some shit, but it definitely makes more sense if he were named Greed.

Like I said, maybe later books are amazing, but the snippets I read didn't inspire me at all. Perhaps part of it is the translation process and cultural differences, but if those aren't ironed out by Chapter 2000, when will they be?? Worst book I've read in a long time, even with some of them being woke shitfests. At least they were well-ish written.

Yeah, you gave it a shot. I remember how much the beginning sucked, but I stuck with it and really like the way the story became. So here's some eventual changes.
He marries the daughter of the town he works in. They eventually have a child named Lord. I guess the game somehow makes it happen. When he marries her, he eventually becomes the lord of that town when her father dies. Eventually he unites quite a few areas together and becomes the king of that region, but the Empire is against him. Lots of things happen and he becomes the emperor as well, and marries the current emperor. They venture into hell and he somehow defeats Baal, which is their version of Satan. He also becomes a God of the world, which makes the Overgeared empire into the religion of Overgeared. And now he's allied with Rebeca, this series version of the christian God, and works with her to eliminate the corruption in Asgard (heaven). The series is coming to a close now with just a few more boss battles to go. And they were talking about somehow this game allowing people to gain abilities in real life to save the world from an impending comet which will eliminate life on earth. That story appears to just be in the background though, and hasn't gone anywhere.
It's a silly story, but I really like how it is written later on. It really captured my attention, even if I had to struggle through the beginning.

Thanks, at least now I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. Some of that sounds like it could have been appealing, if it were well written, but I have my doubts.

I realize that there HAS to be something there, otherwise he wouldn't have kept writing all of those chapters, so I applaud you for making it to the "good stuff." I just can't ever see myself suffering through to get there, or even really liking it much once I did. But I tried, and I appreciate all the recommendations you and others give here. We can't all like the same stuff. If we did, all music would be sung by King Diamond!

The brief narrative I gave is extremely extremely limited. And the best part about Overgeared (in my opinion) are the ridiculous fight sequences. The author really dreams up some crazy shit and it is written very well. How he takes out an unlimited number of enemies is very enjoyable. And the "sword dance" that takes over the early parts of the story is hardly mentioned anymore, except saying a skill name and that it's effective. He once got an achievement for causing the most damage in a single strike than any existence in the game. But still, those fights rule.
