Yeah I found most of these pretty disappointing. Life Hutch was masterclass animation, but the story was a bit 'uh, ok'. I think I liked Snow in the Desert the best.
i liked... uh.. i think pop squad was the name? the one with nolan north about the breeders. i liked it because it felt like there was an actual emotional arc. snow in the desert was good, too, but i feel like there wasn't much of any emotional drive. that's honestly my biggest issue. it was all very nice to look at but was generally pretty simple sci-fi.
life hutch is a perfect example, i think, of why this season failed comparatively.
this is all spoilers i guess.
so life hutch is about surviving damaged AI. it feeds on the fear that machines might try to kill us one day. there's nothing wrong with a story about that, per se, but it's pretty cliche at this point. on top of the fact that that theme was already explored in Automated Customer Service, the very first episode.
Sonnie's Edge and Beyond the Aquila rift from the first season get so much attention because there is a story being told that carry's you RIGHT to the gut punch of the reveal. they are great examples of how to do sci-fi short stories.
pop squad is a good story, i think but maybe suffers a little from it being slow, which doesn't make a short story memorable. i think it'd make a pretty great movie if it delved into the setting and background a bit more, though it might end up being derivative.
