This guy makes pretty good, self-contained survival maps. I thought it would be great to have a server for them since they are designed for 2-5 players but I lack the technical know-how to set it up.

I am playing through herobrine's mansion right now. He also has a survival arena map that is really quite good that I think would fit with the forums minecraft crowd. All his maps you don't need to put mods in or anything, they work 100% just using the save file.

Can't recommend this Survival/Quest map enough, been addicted to it all weekendSkyden-a-modded-sky-survival-map-with-npcs-and-quests/

It's a type of old school FTB but without the soul crushing bullshit to start you off like fucking around trying to build in waterfalls etc. There are a couple of balance issues as it's an early release version and at times they encourage you to maybe cheat in a particular component if you've tried to get it and died horribly and repeatedly to do so etc but other than that it's really well presented and gates everything better than anything I've tried before.

For something of that scale they would definitely be using creative mode with a large group of people OR using creative mode with some kind of copypasta mod, which makes designing a city of that size a helluva lot easier.

You can create like 20 different little building types, and copy and paste them throughout the city. Which is still a lot of planning and work

The majority has been created by hand, the server is however creative mode.
You can connect and take a walk around the game world, you just obviously cannot build.

Yeah I read they have a 100 person server which is regularly full up, it resets once an hour or so to give more spectators a chance to login to and look round.

I've been on there a few times, though not recently. Harrenhal is mind blowingly massive. You just have no idea the scale of what they've done by screenshots alone. The server is best experienced with their texture pack.

There's a craftbukkit offshoot now called MCPC-plus or something like that which lets servers use single-player mods without having to port anything, supposedly. That feature is beta but it's worked for me so far on my little family server (mainly for Mo' Creatures, woo!). The players have to have the mod installed as well but if it is stable and inclusive then it really opens up a ton more options that haven't existed in MP so far, or were under-developed. It should probably be made official, along with magic launcher and optifine, it boggles the mind that optifine especially hasn't been incorporated.

They offered the Optifine writer some coins and he turned them down flat.

One example of how fucked the core codebase is Jeb/Dinnerbone have attempted to rewrite the lighting engine multiple times in the last 12 months and they still aren't much further on than they were before.

There are some fucking amazing mods around nowadays, it's a struggle for packs to keep up with the deluge of stuff. Some interesting examples :

Technic platform is interesting but I see the FTB pack has added in a similar option. They basically allow someone to make a modpack, upload it to a particular address and then distribute it so the end user can plug in that url and get the modpack downloaded and installed for them, makes putting private server packs together a doddle.

As far as politics goes, FTB still hasn't reopened up donations to the actual modders (Allegedly once Slowpoke got his convention attending money the donation button was removed...) and other amusing crap is ongoing, especially with some of the crazier mod authors trying (and failing) to put DRM into their mods to stop certain people/packs running them.

If you guys haven't messed around with Thaumcraft, you are really missing out. The shit Azanor thinks up, not to mention creates awesome graphics for, is just incredible. Most fun I've had messing around with a mod in Minecraft ever.

As far as I know the donate button was never functional. All the convention money Slow earned via his twitch stream, I was in there that night as it was the night the FTB launcher released. He also used some of the donations to get a tablet for the Xycraft developer. I do know FTB is working on a new version of the launcher so hopefully we'll see the donate button enabled by then.

Eloraam is also finally actively working on her mod again so maybe we'll start seeing bug fixes and new stuff for redpower. Forge essentials (Forge's answer to bukket) is in early alpha and has most of the basic workings so we seem to be squaring off for yet another fascinating community fracturing Forge vs Bukket thing like the FTB vs Technic hoo-haw.

I forget where I saw it but after 1.5 is out they're supposed to start working on the graphics engine with the goal of full shader support which would be really cool to see.
