Sent you an invite.

On a side note: I hate trying to speak to someone over Miiverse, heh.
Awesome. I'll be on tomorrow seeing as how a 6 gb file on Nintendo's servers takes 14 hours

I miss Steam.

Haha agreed it is terrible. My friend might be willing to let some of us use his vent. I use it all the time but it is only a 15 person server and we have around 4-7 regulars. So we'll see.

Unfortunately, I can't find my wifi keyboard to hook up to the Wii U and I've heard the voice chat is kind of shitty. So either we'll have to deal with ingame typing, hope voice chat works well, or some other way like vent.
The voice chat actually isn't too bad, but for some reason my roomate can't hear me.

Man this is pretty fun so far. I'm using the heavy bowgun. It feels like a canon which is awesome. When should someone who has never played a monster hunter game go online? I still feel like I suck at it and I'm still doing all the starting stuff 2 hours in.

I would kill a few big monsters at least. Great Jaggi, Arzuros, and maybe even Qurupeco who will provide your first challenge depending on your weapon. After that you'll have somewhat of an idea of the basics, but solo play is always good to come back to for resources and what not.

Holy crap I'm loving this game so far. I have never played a Monster Hunter ever, so this is all new to me. I'm having a blast, I went to bed way to late last night. I just killed the Great Jaggi and opened up 2 Star missions and the desert area. I am really looking forward to playing online.

Feel free to add me, my tag is in my sig.

I'm going to be playing online tonight for awhile sometime after 8PM EST. I would attempt to at least take down Qurupeco offline if you're new to the series before you go online. And before you take down Qurupeco I would suggest getting a green sharpness weapon or you might get frustrated with the amount of whetstones he'll require.

I don't care about skill level, I'll just be doing 1 HR missions which has Qurupeco, Rathian, Gobul, and I think a couple others. So there can definitely be some challenge if you're unprepared.

When you say 'green sharpness weapon' do you mean that color slider I see when crafting weapons? Not 100% sure what all that means though.

The color slider has a sort of maximum sharpness set to it. Red < Orange < Yellow < Green < Blue < White < Pink. The farther to the right on the sharpness bar, the less deflects/bouncing off strikes you get, you do more damage consistently and it basically enables you to kill things much faster. If you have a yellow or lower quality weapon (don't know if any start in orange, but yellow is not that great) when it comes to sharpness, you will either run through lots of sharpening stones while fighting mid-range and beyond mobs or simply be unable to kill them. I don't know if you can even hurt some of the tougher monsters unless you have at least a green sharpness weapon.

Granted, this information is from MHTri for the wii, not the ultimate version.

Pretty much exactly what Rezz said. The sharper the weapon, the less bouncing/deflecting (which hurts your sharpness A LOT), the more damage you do(sharpness has a damage modifier), and overall the better the weapon it is. The larger the color on the bar (ex: one weapon has double the amount of green on it) the longer that sharpness of that color lasts. Green sharpness is basically the minimum you'll want to fight with online, especially after you get to monsters like Qurupeco.

That said, some weapons and abilities negate bouncing. The hammer's 3rd charge will never deflect/bounce, but it will do more damage if its fully sharpened. The lance is usually one of the sharpest weapons in the game so early on they usually have a sharpness advantage.

The first thing to do imo is the focus on a weapon and get it to a green sharpness, hopefully more than just a sliver of green sharpness too (though some is better than none).

I've got all my G. Jaggi armor and a green+ weapon. Game is fun as hell. Glad I bought it. I have Tri, but the lack of HD and overall terrible controls really killed it for me. This game makes me appreciate the Wii U remote. We should really get a group together tomorrow night and tear some shit up.

I finally got some time to play last night and killed the Great Jaggi offline, and upgraded to Iron Grace LS. Probably want to get the next upgrade which has a big green bar before going online. Which means I need to get to the next area for Pelgacite Ore.

Was a lot easier than on Tri, probably because it's my 2nd MH game and experience matters more than anything.

Also I noticed you start out with 50 DEF, whereas in Tri you had zero.

Couple of questions, playing as Bow and 1st MH game:

  • Armor- So far there have been two "sets" available for me to purchase / forge. One Mail (listed as Blademaster) and one Vest (listed as Gunner). Stats wise the Mail versions have almost twice the Armor, but generally have lower resists than the vests. Looking at the G. Jaggi set and trying to figure out if at this level if +/- 1 difference in a resist is going to matter vs. twice the AC. Both sets seem to have the exact same skills and +/- attributes for those. Is there anything kind of behind the scenes that plays in to this? Took me a while, and searching online, but did finally learn what "skills" really are and how the point system on armor impacts those.
  • Storing Items in Box- At this point I'm just dumping pretty much everything in to my Item Box. No idea what any of it is for and what is used for crafting, combining, or selling. Are there any overall strats to what is safe to dump for cash? Just this morning got in to understanding the whole combining process and it looks like nearly everything is used in some sort of recipe.
  • Weapons (Bow mainly)- Really, and maybe this is part and parcel with Bow at this point, struggling with killing large monsters. Guess the Great Jaggi is the only thing "big" I've fought so far, but Jesus it took forever. Right now the melee attack seems to do significantly more damage. Don't have any components to forge a new bow (and the price seems to scale dramatically for the next tier) and the chick isn't selling anything but Hunter Bow I.

Oh well, just some things that came up late last night while playing a bit. Only now just killed a couple of G. Jaggi and have to go do the Azuros quest too. My main complaint right now (other than needing thousands of arrows to kill anything), is the targeting / aiming system using the bow. Like to be able to customize the controls a bit and change what the analog sticks do. Hard holding R1 and using thumb on R Stick to aim while pressing X to fire. Also the dodge ability... really would love for it to just dodge the direction the L Stick is being pressed. Half the time I back hop and half the time it rolls.

Edit: Also have spent zero time trying to figure out the farm, shipping, and trading stuff. Hopefully don't screw myself too bad not diving in to those parts.

Edit 2: Screw this bear... thrown 100 Tranq Bombs at his face while he's in the Shock Trap and no capture. He's rolling around on the ground stumbling all over himself and lolling about with his tongue hanging out. Frustrating.

I'm just as new, but what little I've been able to gleen from a few hours of on-line play with experienced veterans:

- Blademaster Armor is for melee, Gunner is for ranged. So you'll want to be making the gunner armor. I have no clue what the difference is, since the Vest just seems like a shittier version of the Mail.
- I just store everything for now. Supposedly once you gets enough of a specific drop, it'll list its uses in your recipe hint book.
- I main the bow, and love it. But man, it REALLY seems like an Online-Only weapon. Killing monsters by yourself is a slow, painful process. Off-Line mode, I use a melee weapon to make it go faster. However, Online its amazing. It allows you to do safe, consistent damage to a boss while your melee "tank" it far-away. You are usually the only one able to consistently damage it, since the melee have to wait for a opening to strike.

ManOwarr - You can get the gathering quests online for the forest, tundra, and sandy desert to easily get that ore too. You might not have the tundra unlocked yet offline.

That defense buff is great! I rocked the leather armor for quite awhile until I finally decided to just do a minor upgrade.

Intrinsic - Usually the safe bet is to go Blademaster armor if you're using a melee weapon and Gunner armor if you're a gunner. Later on some armors will have different skills on the gunner sets specifically for gunners. Also, AC is a safer bet with melee weapons because you'll be taking more physical damage, while gunners will likely take more ranged fire/water/thunder/etc attacks. You'll get the NPC companions eventually (Cha cha should be soon) so he'll take the focus off of you a bit. Once online, you won't be getting focused as much so gunner armor is the way to go for ranged characters.

Play with the recipes, have fun with it, find new stuff out. DO NOT sell stuff until you know you won't need it. There is a few items that are specifically for either trading to the Argosy captain or selling for decent profit. They will usually say it in their description, stuff like Steel Eggs or Crowns are $$.

As for the bow, when I went through my descriptions of all the weapons I stated bow is hard to get used to. Make sure you're 'coating' your ammo for more damage. As for unlocking or buying new bows, bows won't show up until you've killed certain monsters. Kill another big monsters and carve it, then it'll show more bows you can buy(though upgrading vs buying can be positive either way, it just depends on the materials required). As for armor, you could kill a Qurupeco and only have 4/5 Qurupeco armor show up, that is because you haven't discovered any pieces for that last piece.

I'm not a huge fan of the bow, but I have seen some really good bow users online. Keep practicing with it, maybe look up some bow info just to see if there is something you missed that could be useful. Lots of stuff changes between each MH games, buffs/nerfs or just complete changes. So even after several hundred hours of MH I have to look stuff up from time to time.

Farm - Do not underestimate the farm. It isn't needed, but it will save you a ton of time and trouble doing stuff with this early. Early on I farm just Herbs and Blue Mushrooms to get my potion/mega potion stack really high. Plus it costs too much if you try to farm the rarer materials early on when you have so few points to spend.

I'm trying to think of an important combining list off the top of my head but I'm just drawing a blank currently. Though the two most basic ones you should know asap (if you already don't):

Herb + Blue Mushroom = Potion
Potion + Honey = Mega Potion

Yeah the ranged weapons are best for inflicting status effects rather than doing a ton of damage, which means they bring more to Online mode when you can help damage dealing allies make fights easier with paralyze, poison, etc.
