Dandain beat him the other night, but I don't remember him saying what he used. Maybe he'll chime in.

If you've never played before go through all the starting weapon tutorials and try to find something that feels right to you. They can all feel a little awkward at first, and the controls / camera are not the easiest thing in the world to manage. A lot seems unintuitive but after time it more or less comes together and starts to flow. There's an overwhelming amount of stuff. This guy's Youtube channel has a ton of great videos for weapon tutorials and other things (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT8...fSSD_iMfpKbFbA).

Do the single player missions, read the tutorials and help screen stuff, and ask here. Don't be scared to harvest / loot everything you can. Almost none of it is junk and can be used to craft something. You have a ton of bank space.

The story quest unlocks all the extra stuff you'll need to continue in the game and will introduce you to the monsters in a progressive order to learn their abilities and moves. They're also a little easier than the Guild Quest versions. I wouldn't suggest trying to solo all the Guild Quests, not if you're new.

On Shagaru Magala. Any tips on what armor I should have against this guy? :/
I used Rathian armor socketed for 50 health, Maestro 1 (horns less likely to break), and Fire attack +1 with a fire element weapon (long sword is my weapon of preference). Don't forget to take advantages of all the consumables in monster hunter - they are valuable and sometimes a bitch to craft or harvest but they can be the difference at times. Its easy to play without some of the more expensive items like demondrugs, armor skin, traps and bombs as you don't necessarily break them out for farming or even basic progression, but when you hit a monster that seems really tough to crack turn to the item chest and see what works for your style. The main consumable items I used extra were a demonhorn and armorhorn.

Approach it understanding that you have a limited pool of health (10 mega + 10 potion + 10 honey) more or less, and focus on evasion of his attacks. The attacks that present openings are the rise up and ground slam where debris animates when it slams down as well as the multi "hand" charge where it slams forward a substantial distance. Those two moves are also a really good time to activate an action so you don't get clipped while drinking a consumable or setting a trap. you either need to be running around weapon sheathed some distance away (beyond the arc blast) or you need to be inside his front legs or on his flanks. The arc blast is a stupid amount of damage and anytime you get hit by it is a mistake. If your weapon is shealthed just evade attacks and wait for the slam/charge forward. When it is enraged and almost doesn't stop attacking or charging across the room again just evade - it will exhaust eventually and slow down a bit. Any attacks you make should not be heavy trades. It goes without saying try to jump attack it off every little ledge on in the room. If you do not get enough openings to convert the curse into a damage buff use null berries to give you more time to reach the threshhold. If you do get the red debuff it becomes even more important to not get greedy.

Anything more specific? let me know if this helps. This website is a quick lookup of many aspects of the game. Such as if you need a monsters tail or horns you can see if capturing or carving yield the better chance (or even what the chances are for any given part at all) Or which elements it is weak(er) to.

Ok played this last night on the couch while catching up on some shows and it is getting addicting now. My next problem will be do I shelf this for MH3 when my Wii U comes back tomorrow or play this one. Or both I guess. Ha.

Took out Shagaru with Gore/Ceanataur combo and Tiger wep cause of blue sharpness (negative affinity but meh). Dropped him twice to upgrade the dragon wep. I'm stalling myself from entering high rank tho, waiting for my brothers to catch up. Trying to get a kirin guild quest from an expeditiin. No luck yet, but what fun is monster hunter without the grind? I also love the Meownster Hunter mini game to get Palico gear. Highly amusing. And thank god the only time you see plesioth is when you fish him. Hate that asshole.

I'm dying on the rare components. Killed so many Gore Magala without seeing a plate, both solo and with Reth and friends. And killed a ton of Najarala without seeing a sharp beak, breaking his face, etc... But yeah, thems the breaks. Getting real good at killing them both it is like auto pilot now.

Speaking of Palico's, is there any way to stop mine from Meowing constantly while out in the field?

Sadly no, not unless you just don't bring them. I just mentally tune it out, like the fact that your character is grunting every 20 seconds. Still better than cha cha and kayamba tho.

In Tri I farmed Brachydios for over 10 hours to get what I needed. It's like EverQuest all over again.

MH pretty much is EQ but can be played single player

I may pick this up. I liked MH3 alright on the 3DS. Are most people playing this WiiU or 3DS?
