I've played maybe 3 hours and I'm having a lot of fun, but confused as hell... Maybe someone could answer a few of these questions, I'm guessing this is all basic stuff but I'm struggling with it.

1) How do I tell when a food buff that I order at the canteen wears off?
2) Not in love with the combat but I may be figuring it out. With the bow for instance, it looks like you have to always point your character in the right direction when using a special move , O + Triangle for example? I'm used to FPS where you can select aim first and adjust your character's direction. A lot of times my camera is on the monster but my guy starts pew pew'ing a tree in the opposite direction.
3) Are coatings basically just switching your ammo type ? I see all these different ammos in my chest in my room but don't have access to them out on a hunt, do I need to transfer the special ammos to my pouch before going out? How long does a coating last, and is it possible to see the buff status somewhere like with the canteen food?
4) When talking to the guy at the forge, there's a "customize XXX(bowgun, maybe?)". How do I use this thing? Does it replace the slinger or something?
5) Picking up all the animal tracks, slimes, etc.. Is it worth it to keep "collecting" these , like does it incrementally unlock secrets about the monster? Would it make sense to go track the shit out of something and then go back and load up on the appropriate gear back home?

Thanks, newb stuff I know.

1.) You'll see your health/stamina drop and see a popup message on the right hand side saying you, "can eat again." While on the hunt you can use the BBQ to roast something on the spot but it takes some getting used to as there's a fine line between burning the shit out of something and getting raw steak. This will give you some food buffs but not as good as the canteen.

2.) The bow's charge attack is all about knowing when to use it safely and able to hit your mark. The same goes for most all the weapons and their charge attacks. The bow's charge attack you can aim a little while its firing up using the right hand thumbstick. The normal attacks you have much more control over your aiming.

3.) Ammo Type = Bowguns and Coating = Bow only. You need the special coating in your ammo pouch before you head out. You can see whats available on the bottom right and you can use triangle to apply it.

It looks funky but that weird canister on the Bow is the coating applier. You'll see your character hit it and an icon next to the ammo type saying this coating is applied or not.

4.) You probably aren't far enough to get the customization mods for the bowgun. There's like, reduce recoil, reload faster, etc etc. This only applies to bowgun the slinger never changes.

5.) Yes keep collecting. If you level up your monster knowledge you can find them faster and have various combat perks when fighting them.

Loving this game, enormously. Can't believe I'd never played one of these before, and was on the fence about playing this one after beta. Like a fucking idiot, I didn't realize there was another "tier" of armor/weapons, and I've been going shit crazy forging every piece of every armor set I unlock while I probably should have been hoarding away the mats. Anyone far enough in, how close to the end of the campaign am I? Switch Axe and LBG are fun as fuck

["Just killed Legiana so my airship can keep going further down"]

How do you deal with LBG on the bigger beasts? I tried it versus a Barroth and got pissed that it basically took every single ammo type I had and also for fucking ever to kill it. Do I just need to git gud?

1) The game will tell you that you can eat again. That's it as far as I know. If you got a Hp/Stam buff it's easy to see when it drops off though. It also goes away when you get carted.
2) For Dragon piercer, the bow charge move, you can't change the direction you aim once you use it, and it will go in the way you are facing.
3) Coatings are like weapon buffs. Yes you need to transfer ammos to your pouch if you want to use them. Ammo is for bowguns, not bows though. How long coatings last depend on the coatings. Some have a limit, some are unlimited. It will show you how many uses of the coating you have left.
4) I don't see a Customize XXX, I do see a Cuztomize Bowgun as the 4th option though. It's pretty self explanatory once you get into the menu.
5) Yes it's worthwhile, the more you learn about monsters, the more you know where to break to get various items and other useful tidbits of information. Make sure you are talking to the Ecological guy for unlocks, and look at the Monster compendium he has. Initially the cap is 3 but it goes up to 6 later game.

The last zone in the game is the best by FAR, it's absolutely amazing wandering around it.

Thanks TJT and Chysamere. As far as the bowgun though, how do i actually use the thing? Or it's probably just not unlocked yet?

The basic one is in your supply box inventory in your room. Or you can craft the Bone line one that starts out a bit stronger. Once you do just a few quests you'll be overflowing with bones for the basic shit in no time.

You have the basic iron version of all weapons from the get go.

Out of curiosity how have you been able to get so far and craft every piece of each armor set? I must be pretty bad/slow at this as I get very few parts from each quest and haven’t farmed a whole lot but I’m also only at Anjanath and struggling some. Are you just capturing everything for extra components or as you progress further getting components for crafting gear gets that much easier?

I must be doing something wrong here!

He is a true believer in Fashion Hunter. Even if capturing everything it can take quite a few captures of X creature to build their set. The other stuff that requires shit like Dragonite Ore and other components can short you on it.

The man is on a mission is all!

I'm probably 30 hours in, but I've killed Anjanath like 6 times, Legiana a bunch etc.... The monster that is pissing me the fucking off atm though is Odogaron - his move set is fast and I'm having a pita trying to learn him.... I do try to capture as many as I can but for some reason it doesn't work? Like sometimes I'll lay the shock trap when I get them back to their lair and they're asleep, and once it hits them I capture them. Other times I lay the trap and it just pisses them off even more. I guess I have to lay the trap and tranq bomb them, but sometimes it works without tranqs

I find that weapon works really well in groups (though its effective solo) - are you knocking off the mud armor on Barroth? You can use your little slinger thing to knock that off and the pew pew him easier. Slice bullets work well against those mobs - I main the switch axe though so I can cut tails off

Also, I realized I was a fucking idiot regarding how I use my PS4. I play it via remote play because I don't want wires, or sit in the living room where the TV is 10 feet from the couch and small.

That being said, I had the damnedest time getting a microphone to work on this setup. The workaround I'd used was hooking up my Arctis 7 headset directly to the PS4. But this allowed me to use the mic, but the remoteplay forced the voice chat to my PC output for some reason.

Today after several months of this I discover that the microphone icon on Remote Play's overlay was actually to activate my PC's microphone as the input and removing all asspain I had trying to figure it out.

Hopefully this makes those morons realize that the US wants all console MH releases going forward.

Nintendo Switch Monster Hunter could be good. Not that I'd buy a switch or anything most likely. But still.

We got console MH releases and they failed, which is why they moved to PSP and 3DS.

I've never played a Monster Hunter before this. But it goes without saying the mobile online component is where it made its fame.

I've never given a shit about mobile gaming at all so I never bothered.

Don't come in here with your facts bro, I feel like we were left out and that is all that matters!!!

Seriously though, the US audience just needed to see the light and we did! Doesn't hurt th at the game is fucking gorgeous.

Never played a MH game before but picked this up on Friday and had tons of fun over the weekend. The number of obscure and unexplained features is a bit daunting, but I basically just said "fuck it, I'll figure it out later" and that seems to have been an okay strategy. I understand most of what is going on now.

Switching between dual swords and katana and haven't really had any issues killing stuff up to and including the Anjanath. I kind of think I'm about to get stomped now that I'm in Coral Highlands. Wow - that zone is amazingly beautiful.

I shied away from ranged weapons because it seemed counter-intuitive to play one and I figured I'd get better if I was doing melee.

My armor is a shitty hodge-podge of Barroth and Lightning Wyvern (Kodath?) armor but I'm working on it. I kinda have been working on the Dark Souls model that not getting hit is the best way to get past stuff. Status effects suck. I have to figure out a better counter to those.

I also just started using traps in fights, and that's a lot of fun. My Stinger strategy sucks and I basically never use that thing for anything. Something else to figure out.

Anyway, really fun game and I'm happy I got it (despite my friend's assessment in beta that the game was ass).

I am having such a blast with this game. The Insect Glaive is such a fun weapon and being able to stay in the air for a full stamina use is so satisfying. The only issue I am having is deciding what armor I want to forge.

Does the Artillery stat only affect guns or will it increase all weapons attack power? The tooltip is "Increases power of each attack by 10% and reduces Wyvern's Fire cooldown by 15%"
