EDH rarely keeps my attention for very long. I vastly prefer competitive constructed formats even though I try to keep an EDH deck on me just in case nothing else is going on.

I've built a fairly impressive collection in the time I've been playing again, most of it through below market prices. In fact, Ronne that collection I bought from you is what helped me bootstrap my way back into modern and eventually legacy. There was all sorts of random EDH gold in that, and I bulked out the rest to SCG for staples like Wastelands. I'm seriously debating just trying to turn the corner and trade more aggressively without regard to my own deck needs. There's a thriving modern and legacy community out here, but if if there is one thing I have learned it is that I can always find another copy of a card.

I'm sitting on a more or less complete playset of the modern top 300 except a few Affinity cards, half a playset of duals, 35 or so fetches, and several key staples for legacy. I have the inventory to start trading pretty heavily. My problem is that I just haven't really learned how to game the buylists the way that the sharks manage to do it.

I'm glad you came out ahead on that pile, I just was not willing to put the time in to sorting it all. It was just intimidating to even look at all stacked up in the corner.

No shit. That pile of boxes was the bloated death left over from the collapse of a mismanaged game store that took far too long to finally die. I'd have sworn it was all cursed. That any good came from it is truly amazing.

Oh, it was a gem. I loaded it all up and took it to the local shop where the regulars treated it like Christmas morning and helped me sort through it all in about a weekend. I kept roughly 10k cards, and sorted out the rest for SCG. I had to borrow a hand truck just to wheel it into the convention hall, and after taking a single look they just asked me to ballpark the volume for them. Didn't even do their own count, they took me at my word. Between all the $3/1000 junk and having sorted out anything they were buying for a nickel to a quarter, they ended up giving me $460 in credit. Not bad for a giant pile of Benalish Heros.

It took a long time to slowly flip all the random EDH stuff into worthwhile cards, but a few Opens and GPs made it possible. I still have a bunch of it, actually.

Yep, sounds exactly like what I didn't want to deal with lol. The amount of like ice age/homelands that was in there was just soul crushing. So, so many dire wolves.

At one point I had gotten in my head to sort out anything older than revised because even commons/garbage from dark/antiquities etc has decent buy prices on troll n toad etc, but I was too lazy to even finish that.

I still have a box of all that junk but none of it is really worth anything. It's a whole bunch of Lifelace and Jade Leeches. The reliable money was in things like Hymn to Tourach and Dark Ritual. Sold a whole stack of those.

Aggregate value of the collection made it very worthwhile, but you didn't overlook any insane money cards. No goyfs, bobs, Wastelands, Force of Wills, old fetches etc. The most expensive individual card at the time was probably Crucible of Worlds. Some of the filterlands have jumped since, and a couple things like Flusterstorm.

Heading to GP Portland tomorrow morning, it'll be interesting to see how the four day schedule works out. I am a bit nervous though since Cascade Games, which is running GP Portland, does a less than stellar job at the conventions here in Seattle. But then they are planning this from the ground up and aren't at the whims of a con organizer.

In other news, got to talk to some people who are in the know and found out a big reason why standard currently sucks. Apparently the Future-Future League didn't see mono-black coming at all, and the mono-blue devotion deck in the league was a midrange deck with zero one drops. Gogo testing go!

Eh they specifically designed the set around mono colour matters and put seed cards in Ravnica with multiple mana symbols???

They've actually said that they didn't come up with devotion yet when they made nightveil specter/boros reckoner/etc.

Mutavault + Thoughtseize should have been so blindingly obvious.

Step 1: Identify strongest cards in the meta (conveniently the two high profile reprints, which tells you something about the current set).
Step 2: Put them in the same deck.
Step 3: Win.

I cannot wait for Mutavault to rotate out. It will solve many, but not all, problems with the current standard.

I really think that Lifebane Zombie was the only mistake in the format. It made mono black too good against what would have otherwise helped keep it in check.

It was an aggregate problem. Lifebane is really strong, but the main deck game plan of Thoughtseize, Mutavault and Pack Rat is powerful even without it.

Is it just me or is Stain The Mind really really good in Orzhov control?

With Elspeth already a staple in the deck, thats 4 creatures to tap for convoke right there.

Going forward into Khans Orzhov control is looking better and better. Cant wait to see what khans has for it.

I think the card is very underrated right now, but in the example you gave, it's just win more. Generally, when you untap with an active Elspeth you're going to win.

Elspeth isn't a creature so if you're counting on using this the turn you play her, you only have 3 creatures to convoke with. If you're planning to use it next turn...well Grabbit made a good point.

But in pure WB control you don't have any way to protect her. You should still be concerned about opposing Hero's Downfall, Banishing Light and Detention Sphere.

Anyone know anything about alternate 4th edition/summer 4th edition (not revised summer with duals etc)? Came across one of the starter decks for it but not finding a ton of information about if it's actually worth anything or is just an oddity.

It's this shit:M:TG Archive - Alternate Fourth Edition
