None of the people I am playing with seem to value green all that highly and I keep getting handed cards like Awaken the Bear and Savage Punch way later than makes sense. I really shouldn't even be trying to draft anything else until that changes. I should just sit down intending to force green from the very start unless I open something that's big dollars.

My group is like that, you can know what people are going to be playing before you even crack packs. U/W Flyer Guy, Red Weenie Guy, Black Discard Guy.

My play group is like that most of the time. We had one guy (who we dont play with anymore) who would draft rares he liked to play normally even if he had no intention on playing them. We always re draft rares at the end in my kitchen table group. He played black a lot, if you passed him something good in black he was taking it no matter what. Really annoying.

Has everyone been able to get their hands on enough product given the drought?
Our local shop is having trouble keeping cards in, and it's hurting attendance. Last FNM was the smallest I have seen in months and I attribute most of it to simply not having cards in stock the last week. The owners really fumbled the ball with Khans, ordering only as much as they did Theros rather than the max allotment. Combine that with both of them deciding to be out of town on the same weekend, plus GP Orlando, and it was a ghost town at ~18 players.

They have a sealed PTQ scheduled for Oct 18, so I hope it clears up by then. They'll need several cases to pull that off.

Store I go to has such an ungodly amount of product it's hilarious. I don't even know how they afford to give the payouts they do, 40 packs per 8 person draft pod at 15$ doesn't add it. Does Wizards just give stores free shit to use?

40 packs total for the draft? So 16 packs as payout? That's high, but they're not losing money. It's still $3 a pack, and they probably pay more like $2.

I just called my local store and asked if they had any boxes before I went in because I have been hearing of shortages. They have 11 boxes.

No, the payout is 40 packs. It's like a 12 9 7 4 2 2 2 2 prize pool or something ridiculous.

That sounds off. It sounds break even at best and I'd be surprised if they didn't take a small loss at those numbers. If we assume they get packs at $2 cost that leaves $5 profit for 4th-8th after payout and product. $2 is about right IIRC I think it might be as low as $1.80 a pack depending but I don't think it's lower. That would be absolutely insane payout unless it's some special event. If it's a store that does a business via food and drinks and shit I could see it but they would have to be next to a military base with a ton of magic playing baby military who throw money around like Saudi Princes (which is depressingly likely).

The store I play at in AR has stupid high payouts for things like pre-releases and better than anywhere else I've ever played for average events but they don't come close to touching that.

Backdraft is the only way to draft.

Is it just me or does Ashcloud Phoenix seem really good? Fits in both aggressive and more controlling shells. Can even do things like Phoenix into End Hostilities.

Beyond that I am keeping an eye on a mono-white devotion shell. Gerry Thompson posted a version earlier today on StarCityGames but I've seen some others floating around.

Fuck that. Maybe if I was drafting and everyone else was someone I knew very well and considered better than myself as a player. In every other situation imaginable I consider redrafting boiling down to buying packs with the casual timmies of the world and then trading them a foil Search the City for that shitty JTMS they opened to "help them out". If a group of people get together for the purpose of redrafting that's their prerogative and I assume that's what you guys are talking about but I despise shops and players that do that shit and fuck newer and more casual players out of any cards they might open that aren't bulk rares. I feel strongly about the topic because the only times I have ever seen it occur were where a few shitheads were pushing it on some newer less experienced players.

Backdrafting is good for hardcore types too - it lets you draft "for real" to practice for high prize events while not screwing yourself on pack value because you had to pass a high value constructed card that sucks in limited.

My only experiences with it are with friends, mostly while playing Beast

After coming back to the game it didn't take me all that long to decide I wasn't interested in backdrafting. The only person so far I've seen that was pushing for it was also The Shark that likely had the best chance of getting first picks (and he knew it). I like my casual derping just fine as it is, thanks.

We do it so that the decks are more competitive. Drafting to win. Thats what makes hate drafting so annoying while we do it. And not just hate drafting but taking something thats outside your color because you like it.
