There is a range of severity. Your lung is made up of millions of discrete air sacs. It is possible for one or more of them to lose their tension and become collapsed. You have some inside you right now. Collapsed air sacs. How many individual sacs must collapse before we call it a 'lung collapse'? Minor effusions sometimes just happen.
