What drives that lack of competition I wonder.
So if you took the 'pay for play' out of college sports, 5 stars would just start choosing Alabama Polytechnical Institute over Alabama?

Right away no. But the more equitable it is the more likely other schools will be to win and then able to better recruit. So on and so forth. So if you took the 'pay for play' out of college sports, 5 stars would just start choosing Alabama Polytechnical Institute over Alabama?

So why have tuition prices risen 1-30% over inflation each year? Shouldn't all the big sports schools (especially state ones) be free?
In the AZ constitution, ASU needs to be "as free as possible", but all this money coming in for stadiums and sports related expenses and tuition continues to skyrocket.
Hmmmm
Right but that's the point. The college athletics scam is built on and providing fake income to justify expansions of schools rather than simply providing a good service (education).
This is the big time version of Bernie's wife and her VT school of woodworking. Like having a successful car dealership with a few section 8 housing apartments out back and claiming your mission to provide affordable housing isn't generating enough income so the government should keep giving you money to put into the property.
From what I have read it's an arms race for schools...Trying to keep up with the Jones's.
Easily fixed by requiring all sports funds to be split equally among the conference or setting a cap. The cap can be money or a limited number of high star recruits. You could also do something like offer a limited number of scholarships. The worse the school is the more scholarships they are allowed to offer players. Someone like Alabama gets 10 for football as an example. Someone like Boise State gets 20. Etc etc. So many ways to make it more competitive than this horseshit.Take pay for play out of the equation, and let's pretend that everyone is on the up and up regarding the amateur status of student athletes.
Elite schools still have the ability to provide the best (highest paid) coaches, athletic trainers, strength trainers, position trainers, personnel, etc. They also have the ability to provide the nicest locker rooms, dorms, dayrooms, gyms, gear, uniforms, stadiums, etc.
Now insert history and clout. Alabama competes with Florida and Notre Dame and USC. They are paying students that would otherwise go to those schools. The little schools aren't even in the discussion and never will be for top tier athletes period.
Right and certainly there's more at play than college sports but still... How did we get to Olympic stadiums on campuses from providing extracurricular activities and think that's still the same thing?

Seems like you have reason enough already.Kind of rooting for this to spread, and Alabama football to get the death penalty so I can laugh at my cousins.
I want it to spread so that the NCAA will make reforms.
What need is about 80% less people attending college across the board. No more one and done or three and done rules, just let these retards go pro instead of inflicting them on what is supposed to be an educational institution. All college sports should be intramural or regional at best.
Because it is completely useless and a waste of time and money for these people. University for be the cognitive elite of society. There is no reason for people to go to college if their only interest is just being able to get a job afterwards. You don't need a four year degree to learn how to do a job. We need to transition away from this "everybody needs to go to college" mentality. The elite go to college, everyone else can get job training and apprenticeships, which we need way more of.80% less people attending college? Becaussssseee?
