Not sure this is the reason why San Fransisco decided to use grass. But it has been documented by the NFL and other studies, that serious knee and ankle injuries happen more often on artificial fields. 70% of players surveyed prefer playing on grass, 89.1% claim to have more fatigue and soreness after playing on turf. The only true benefit of turf is much lower upkeep cost. It has a lot to do with with the climate and what type of grass is used, but mostly how much money a team spends on upkeep.

The grass in Levi stadium is actually new after they scraped the original Bermuda and Ryegrass field they were using. I think they use a Tifway Bermuda Grass now, that has had success in the Southern and Southwest stadiums. (Arizona, Tampa Bay, Houston, Tennessee, and Jacksonville) The original Bermuda grass field was the same grass as Washington's Fedex field. Who in their right mind would emulate that field I have no idea.

Sometimes you get these refs who you can tell just love to have their face on camera reading off penalties. It's often hard to see any other plausible reason for repeated shit calls.
