I didn't realize the 2005 team put one of the worst defenses in league history on the field. Also, the results will be a team needing starters at almost every single defensive position, LG, RT, and QB. Oh poor JG, really getting the shaft.
More to the point, 2005 was a mediocre year for the Cowboys (9-7, 3rd in division). They hadsometalent on the team but not a whole lot. Just as many questions back then as they do now, especially defensively since I believe it was either their first or second year under the 3-4 scheme. 2006 was when we started to see glimmers of light before Wade came in and took Parcells' project to a 13-3 record in 2007. I get the feeling this season is going to be 2006 all over again, with glimmers of light here and there, before JG gets ousted and someone else comes in for 2015 to lead the team into a few years of being back near the top.

The defense was solid and ended up ranked 10th. The big difference in 06/07 was replacing Bledsoe with Romo. They had the best offense outside of the Pats with a top 10 defense as well. Parcells was fed up with Jones and Wade inherited a really good team.

As much shit as Garrett gets, all the blame really should be on Jerry Jones. Changing coaches won't fix anything as long as you have a shitty owner doing things like trade 1st and 3rd round picks for Roy Williams and not letting his coach or his OC call plays

So you have Jerry Jones (Al Davis East? What's our nickname here...) dying within the next few months, the Cowboys dumping all their existing contracts (Raiders East? This is getting spooky...) and yet somehow finding enough 7th round / undrafted free agents to compete with the NFL equivalent of couch cushion change you'll have left for your salary cap to start a new golden age.

To be blunt, I find that unlikely.

Why don't you do yourself a favor and say, barring some miraculous one-and-done division win playoff appearance, "My team is screwed until 2020+". You'll save yourself significant anguish.

P.S. Odds are the Giants will be complete rebuilding next year themselves (except without as bad a salary cap situation as Dallas), and we will find out soon if the Eagles were a mirage or not. Only the Redskins look to be a mess for the forseeable future.

People like to talk about Dallas' salary cap situation but these same people aren't really paying attention. Everyone remembers how bad things were with the salary cap before the start of the NFL year, right? Something like $20m over? They're currently like $10m under or something close to that. The truth is that every team deals with this in some manner. The ones who don't are the ones who overpay players just to meet the salary floor. It's just clickbait these days to trump up anything Dallas related.

They've shed a lot of bad contracts the past few years. Currently the only one that qualifies, I believe, is Romo. They've jettisoned a bunch of aging players. They purposely didn't sign Hatcher, their best defensive player from last year, because a) he wanted too much money, and b) is on the wrong side of 30. They let Ware go, even though they probably could have kept him and his contract without really touching it. They let Austin and his bad contract go. They were ready to let Free go but he wisely decided to take a lesser deal. They signed Tyron Smith to a huge contract but a lot of agents are pissed at how team friendly it is. The past three years have been rough, but you can see how a lot of things have changed if you pay attention. Hell, Jerry may trump up how he almost took Manziel but the fact that he didn't should say a lot about how much he's listening to the people around him.

My main issue is that they're trying to rebuild on the fly. That isn't really going to work unless you're willing to spend a good 5-6 years, or more, being mediocre.

I guess we'll see how things go this year. I'm expecting good things out of the offense. And at the least they surely can't be as bad as they were last year on defense. I figure 9-7 is probably within reach.

Saints signed Junior Galette to a 4-yr 41.5m contract extension, not sure how much guaranteed, great signing though seeing as, barring injury, he would have became an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season and would have drawn a much larger contract.

23m guaranteed fyi =D I am a Saints fan lol. Ya galette actually was quoted as saying something similar actually. That they got a discount with him but he doesn't care because he is happy where he is and with the money he is getting with the new contract.

Sounds pretty elite to me as far as Cowboys go.
Or that the cowboys qualify their team based on how shitty their division is around them. 9-7 and 3rd? Garbage year. 8-8 and playoffs, super bowl contender!

edit - grammar

Pretty much. All you need is to make the playoffs. Record is irrelevant at that point, as a 7-9 Seattle team once proved.

Besides, that team started off 7-3 and in usual Dallas fashion finished off the season at 2-4.

cowboys havent had double digit wins in double digit years.

this team is so terrible - its signing a 250whatever pick that another barely .500 team threw out, to bolster their first string defense

I will refer you to the 2007 and 2009 seasons before calling you a know-nothing Cutler jack-off.

This thread always devotes so much time to a team that sucks so consistently.

Not really because preseason records don't matter, just ask the 4-0 Lions in the preseason if those 4 preseason games makes them feel better about that 0-16 regular season record.

Thats like saying that Patriots going 16-0 in regular season doesnt matter because they didnt win the Superbowl.

Everything matters.

I could only find records going back to 2004 and Cowboys won at least one preseason game from 2004-2014. Do you know where I can find preseason records earlier than that?
