There's no guarantee that Rodgers would have turned out the same if he had been taken by the 49ers. Smith was put into the worst possible situation. Revolving doors at coach and coordinator, an offensive line that was offensive, etc. They didn't give him much of a chance to begin with. Rodgers would have gotten the same treatment.

Rodgers has been on some pretty bad teams and never looked anything like Alex Smith. That said, it is pretty likely that Rodgers benefited from his years backing up Favre and Smith and Rodgers were considered equal coming out of college, but in hindsight there is no comparison.

Pretty much every scouting report on Rodgers was that he was a good solid QB but had holes in his game that could only be fixed via good coaching, which is exactly what happened.

Sitting for 2 seasons behind a hall of fame QB with good coaching resulted in him being able to develop into a good QB.
Pretty well known Favre did not at all mentor Rodgers. In fact he's quoted -

"It was not my job to mentor Aaron Rodgers"

I only say that to point out another reason why he's (Rodgers) great. He didn't need a veteran showing him the ropes.

He could still sit and watch Favre and how he practiced, how he conducted himself, how he commanded respect, how he approached film, how he conducted himself in meetings. There is a ton you can learn just observing people without needing your hand held.

It goes further than that. Favre pretty much outright said it was dumb to copy what he did, because he was a fly by the seat of his pants and make it up guy. Where Rodgers benefitted was in being able to sit for a couple years and observe game tape/defenses while McFatty brought him up to speed. McCarthy has many failings as a coach, but he is really good at coaching QB talent. Imagine how much better off people like Luck might have been if they had been able to just break down tape and watch NFL defenses for a couple seasons before being thrown into the fire? I think a lot of potentially great QBs have busted purely because they were not given that sort of time to transition to the pros.

Nearly every modern era great QB, with the exception of Peyton, started by riding the pine for a bit. In fact, I would argue that the two best QBs of the modern era (Brady and Rodgers) are case studies in why you don't just start the new guy in their rookie season. I think that putting the rookie out there worked 15-20 years ago, but the game is so sophisticated now that gunslingers who improvise (Favre, Elway, ect) simply can't do that anymore. Occasionally you get a guy like Kaeperbro or Wilson who does something new and has initial success, but then they either adapt (like Wilson somewhat has) or they get figured out (see Kaep).

I'm not surprised at all. No one I know that was a packer or bear fan during the season where they had a two game lead was the least bit concerned about them then, and now that Donkey Kong is in Miami you don't even have to worry about them trying to injure people (as much). Stafford has gotten progressively worse and what little there was that was good about their defense has been traded away or is hurt. Frankly, the one common thread you can find in every Lions game and season is them imploding down the stretch. I knew they were going to be bad coming in this season, but now I wonder if they are actually worse than the Bears or not. Guess we will see how bad Seattle beats them up in this week's scrimmage for comparison.
To clarify a little, definitely didn't think the Packers had to fear the Lions at all for the division title or anything. I just thought they might be an 8-8 team, maybe 9-7. Depended to me how much the Vikings improved. Now they're probably going to be 0-5.

I think they have checked out worse than they did at the tail end of the Matt Millen era. Everything about the end of both the Denver and SD games makes me feel that way. The team has never had much in the way of mental toughness or discipline, but this season they just look like they have given up.

Definitely agree, and the schedule is doing them no favors the next 2 weeks. Can pretty much write this season off already, don't expect that to help their mental toughness

One year ago today when the Pats got crushed 41-14 by Alex Smith and the Chiefs, are in trouble when they go 2-2 in the table and everybody saying that Brady is finished and should retire.

I don't know abut "everybody". I do remember an article saying the sun was setting on the Pats championship window and that Brady wanted a trade.

Even when they were struggling I thought that was Azeth* level retarded

Yeah should have amended that it was most media outlets saying that. Most people on here were pretty accurate actually in saying they will bounce back in the season but nobody would have thought they would go on and win the damn SB
