I figured they were trying to make it a shorter field goal. Either you hit someone on the sidelines or you throw it away. Works for most NFL teams, but most NFL teams can give their QBs 3 seconds in the pocket.

Why the hell would you run an empty set with an o-line that can't protect, with the best running back in the game on the sidelines? At the absolute minimum you run play action that play, but even then you've got one of the weakest arms in football in Bridgewater, and one of the worst offensive lines in the game. This is the exact same way the Vikings lost to Denver in Denver.

Zero dropped passes for Mike Wallace. Crazy.
I mean, when you average less then 3 targets a game you don't drop many. Glad to see leaving the Steelers over cash worked out well for that guy

I like how McFatty is holding to the idea that he expected the middle of the season to suck.

"We look at the season in three stages," McCarthy said. "'Building Your Identity,' we got off to a great start there, 6-0. The second stage was 'The Trials,' the way everything was laid out, it's normal that the middle of the season is gut-wrenching. The Trials was definitely that for us, we were 2-4.

"And now we're into the final stage, 'The Return,'" McCarthy continued. "The return to the initial commitment, it's why we are here. We kind of went back to the beginning and reviewed some things about how we need to play."

Like he wasn't one borderline call and a bad defensive alignment away from going 1-5 after starting 6-0. It's a good thing they won their Super Bowl, because right now they're in danger of wasting Rodgers' best years by getting him killed every weekend.

What are the odds the defense bites on play action in that scenario? That would be the worst play call outside an actual run.

Weeks 15 and 16 the NFL always does Saturday games. They only air on NFL Network and they call them "Thursday Night Football" Saturday edition
Ahh. Well, that's what I get for being a cheap bastard and not getting the upgraded sports package. Fucked me over in the ALDS, too.

We talked about this last year and I mentioned it was McLovin from the DP show that really clarified it. Players coming from the Steelers, Pats, and Ravensalwaysunder-perform on their new teams. Because they draft for and coach to players that will work within their specific system. You'll get an occasional outlier like Richard Seymour, Chad Scott, or Bart Scott. But for every one of them you get multiple Mike Wallaces or Deion Branches.

This is all based on 2 or so years ago, but it was a great point at the time and isn't necessarily wrong now.

Wallace wasn't great on the Steelers. He had other guys around him. The reason when people leave the Steelers or Pats do worse is because they don't have 2 or 3 other guys on their team who are amazing. Sanders seems to be doing okay in Denver. Wallace is a jack ass who thought he was better then he is.

For us its specifically been the linebacking corps. We have been a total factory for getting system OLB's a big free agent payday somewhere else. Generally they are ok on the new team but not really worth the contract. Poor Courtney Upshaw thought it would be his turn this year. I have a feeling we will hold the upper hand in contract negotiations for a change. Gotta find a bright side to this season somewhere.

I agree for the Pats but not so much for the Steelers and definitely not the Ravens. The Pats do have a system with 3-4 key cogs and lots of replaceable parts. But that doesn't mean they won't add elite parts like Talib, Revis, Moss, etc. Belichick changes schemes to fit what he has but elite is elite. Talib is still good as is Revis. Elite doesn't change.

Ravens had a really, really good group of players get a SB but then they fell apart. They haven't been nearly as good and that's because of lost talent. It's not plug and play. Elite was elite there as well. Boldin didn't suddenly lost his talent outside of Baltimore. Smith went to the '9ers so that doesn't count yet. Reed was old as hell and Lewis would have been a stud anywhere. Elite is elite.

Steelers have changed their offensive system and their defense is shit right now. So, how could it be system? Could it possibly be that Big Rapist is an elite, hard to bring down player who helps his WRs get open? Also, Wallace had solid years at Miami even though he is a one trick pony.I think any system can work with a core of elite players and the right coaches to bring out the best in them. And that means even if you change systems like Pittsburgh.

Rodgers didn't suddenly forget how to play football or their system broke down. He lost some elite tools to get the job done.

Players disappearing on new teams happens to everyone. Unless they possess some sort of freakish athletic traits, big FA signings seem to always fail

We've had plenty of FA signings come in and produce. Forsett, D. Mason (still franchise leading WR), Leach, Pollard, we have an MLB from the Jags who's been solid, Boldin, S. Smith. Etc.

But I think the original point was that every year in the offseason there's teams who's fans are like "we are getting X/Y/Z from Balt/Pitt/NE, look at his stats!" then he doesn't end up matching it. These aren't even "big" signings either, just that they were players built by one team and then won the FA lottery to a team who didn't have a structure ready to replicate the success.
