Well ideally your kicker isn't so shitty that he kicks the ball right into his own team within 5 yards and gives the opposing team the ball back in field goal position.

This. I mean you can easily have a better onside attempt. I think they're fucked either way, Jags almost got the first anyways just running for FG attempt.
