Well, the salary thing is one of the reason I think a lot of people didn't like the trade. They have to pay Cooper what he wants in the offseason or else it's truly a wasted pick. Given shit like Sammy Watkin's deal, that's probably going to be 16M+ a year (or at least in that neighborhood) and for at least four years I'd bet. That's a lot of money. Getting a WR on a rookie deal is probably 50 million less over those four years but, as you said, it's riskier. If Cooper continues to play like this, I think it works out even with the financial strain (though one could make the argument it would have been better to keep the pick and get him in free agency, but then you don't get the tryout to see if he really fits in or not).
Cooper's current contract doesn't run out until the 2020 offseason. Cowboys wouldn't have been able to get him in free agency until then.
