I'm sure if a football team from another country wanted to claim that they were better than the superbowl champs, they could contest the "world champ" assertion, but they know how it would turn out.

you're missing the point here. I'm not disputing the superiority of the teams in NFL. It's about winning a domestic league and claim to have won the world title.

It's an audacious claim, but if you're the best in the world and you know it, I think if you want to call yourself the world champ then it's up to the rest of the world to prove you wrong.
