Uh that wasnt goal line defense.
It wasnt helmet to helmet brotato.
It was defenseless receiver.
Right. You defend the goal line, he did.I mean, I'd have to rewind it but it looked like the safety dropped to the goal line then came out to lay a dirty hit.
You're playing deep zone and the deep guy comes your way you cover him, you don't just hang out in your zone and let him catch the ball. He waited too long to make a play and his only option was to do what he did.Right. You defend the goal line, he did.
I mean, if the receiver was on his feet its a completely different story. Its just the guy was laid out mid air to catch the pass. If you are playing your deep zone correctly, that guy should be in front of you. It has to do more with the defenseless receiver rules especially when a guy is mid air.
There is really nothing you can do other than somehow try to go for the ball at that point (not really possible), hitting him is going to be a penalty every time pretty much.
You think they're going to get their tickets to see the Packers/Steelers for free or something?Congratulations Steelers. Congratulations on the Superbowl trip New England.
But that's not that safeties job. The linebacker/nickel corner etc or whoever has underneath coverage is supposed to bracket the receiver and do what you just said. The deep free safeties are typically there just to not to ever get beaten behind them in the endzone...ie keep the deepest receiver in front of you. Its how that bend not break zone system works, and why the Steelers led the league not giving up tds more than 20 yards. The Rams which you watch prolly the most, is a defense that GW blitzes a lot and relies on his corners and safeties to be aggressive in man coverage. You're playing deep zone and the deep guy comes your way you cover him, you don't just hang out in your zone and let him catch the ball. He waited too long to make a play and his only option was to do what he did.
