You forgot the physics simulator and the powers they game gives you to interact with the world (Gravity, Freeze, stop time, etc) which is what sets it apart. Anything you do in the world of BOTW you get a close real life result. Meanwhile in Horizon the only thing you can interact with in the world are basically quick time events - climbing is non existent, water doesn't react realistically, can't cut down trees or grass, can't catch things on fire, can't move rocks or other objects, weather does nothing but provide ambiance, etc. It's just the usual Ubisoft/EA open world.
It definitely had some good mechanics over traditional open world RPG's and a few I have been begging for since my MMORPG days. However, climbing in rain without a counter item to balance that out was an exercise in frustration which I basically said "ok time to stop playing, and wait for the sun so I can climb shit again." The same went when I was trying to light the blue flame paths. Oh sweet - Rain. I'll just do something else until it stops because I cannot counter balance it. They fell down in some of those areas. If it would have had a counter item for every negative impact for weather, I wouldn't have been as frustrated when those instances would hit. (That's just naming a couple). The dungeons were exercises in frustration and while the boss fights had varying mechanics, they were very straight forward and too few of them. The powers received from them were game breaking in a lot of regards making Link way too powerful - but I didn't mind at that point as I had 35+ hours into the game and was ready to get it over with. Weapon durability for Zelda was a HORRIBLE idea which was poorly implemented and frustrating in the early onset of the game. That needed to be toned down a lot. As far as how it ran, pretty much like garbage when taking in the totality of the circumstances which was obviously not optimized for Switch (Confirmed with Digital foundry performance links) and didn't really matter anyway since I played it on the Wii U.
Horizon blew Zelda away in Story, I am sure we can both agree to that - and also epic "Holy shit" moments by the boatloads in terms of Story, some action areas, and plot twists. Character development was through the roof when compared to Zelda. The combat system destroyed Zelda's obviously, so action was a lot more fun. It will be give and take about what you like subjectively. I loved both games, but for me, Horizon with it's story, combat, graphical presentation and awe-inspiring beauty and mystery puts it over the top. With that said, the exploration was a lot more fun in Zelda with looking at POI's and wondering "Hey what's over there..." which, unfortunately, 9 times out of 10 led to jack shit other than a new weapon which I would break in a matter of minutes. The few times it did lead to something rewarding, it was epic. (The giant cube maze full of Ancients) Then again, that was few and far between.Eventide I came across and was saying to myself, "Ok this is awesome! It has to have a great reward, it's a challenging trial... " What did I get?
An orb and 300 rupees....
Zelda was a good game. Zelda was also a HIGHLY overrated game in hindsight 20/20 and all that.
Mario Odyssey is basically Zelda BOTW open world mixed with platforming. I am sure it will be fun. It won't be good enough no matter what I hear to buy this thing unless Xenoblade 2 turns out to be epic (And we are all in a wait and see on that one). By the time I consider one, (When Metroid 4 comes out) it will be on another revision, cheaper, and I'll catch up on the 4-5 games total from Nintendo I missed out on in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Everything else will have greater experiences hands down on any other platform. And yeah, I couldn't give two shits about portability when I want to hear and see fantastic audio and graphical presentations for AAA games in my home theater. So 3rd party for this pile of garbage is out.
Skyrim - 720p30 without mods but added motion controls for a 6 year old game.
Doom - Not even 540p? Even though I hated this generic shooter, I can admit that's what people liked about it and heavy metal music blaring through a speaker set up with gut crunching demon deaths is what people wanted, and got. This doesn't translate well on a portable, and is a low level game breaking port from the experience intended while docked.
Wolfenstien: Same with this game as above.
I was thinking "Hmm.... Rocket league on the go!".... Then I held one of these and realized there is No Fing way with the size of my hands am I going to be anywhere close to effective playing competitively on the Switch, in addition to it's horrid online service to boot.
Nintendo Switch is slowly but surely proving, based on user experiences and intended game play design, why a lot of these games do not port over well to a cramped up 7 inch portable. And with a docked experience that doesn't even support 5.1 Dolby/DTS (Only Linear, which is uncompressed and trust me you aren't getting uncompressed audio tracks on a cart) and is severely limited in the presentation department, why it sucks for that experience as well.
The only reason why the Switch is seeing any of these from publishers like Bethesda and Rock Star is for one reason and one reason only. 1) It's cheap as fuck to port and is an easy attempt at a cash in on old titles no one gives a shit about any longer. And they know if they get them out of the door soon, they will take advantage of a shortage in content. I wouldn't expect this to continue post 2018.
