From what I remember, SNES Secret of Mana release in the US was higher price then any other SNES or other comp game (minus NEO GEO) back in the early 90's.
Because it was originally planned to be a CD release in collaboration with Sony and a much larger game, but that fell through so they chopped it down to what could fit on a cartridge and the rest got recycled over to Chrono Trigger. To recoup the excess development costs they raised the price.

There's plenty of datamined stuff that was never used, as well as photographs from magazines and locations on the map you can't explore.

I think they said they will release a new Steam Deck when theres a big leap in the small form GPU/CPUs, not sure how fast that is advancing though.

How is the Switch 2 compared to Steam Deck spec wise?

Small form stuff is going crazy but I feel like the major blocking point at this point is portable power.

You can already get things like:

that are essentially laptop boards with a 16c/32t CPU on them. Sure, not insanely powerful, but for the price and form factor, pretty impressive.

Wondering when Valve will just pull a "Wii" and release a "Console" that is essentially a small form factor "high end" laptop in a small case for TV use.

If there is a Switch 2 price hike, it'll probably be offset by just trading in the Switch 1 towards it. Not like I need it for anything after this. Should be able to get around $200 at Gamestop due to the system launch trade in bonus. You could maybe get more than that on Ebay or something post-launch, but Gamestop is a better bet because they can just do a simple data transfer from the old system to a new one and you're good to go. Did that when I got a PS5 there. Walked out with about $250 off the PS5 cost and all my PS4 data moved to the PS5.

"If I just let the gamestop employee / trade in people fuck me in the ass, they'll give me a discount!"

OLED Switch dropped from $143 to $121 today and that's the Pro member price. They might still run a promo for trading in towards a Switch 2, but I'll be surprised if it's more than $160 or so. Normally I'd agree with you and I try to do the trade-in thing on most new consoles I buy, but their offers for something that still sells for $350 are criminal.

Hmm, if it's dropped that much... I might just sell my Switch after the Switch 2 comes out and I transfer stuff. Recouping isn't as convenient as getting a substantial discount, but when it's 2x or 3x as much, eh.

it was a KB Toys ad from Canada after more research. And yes, pricing was all over back then. Here’s an American ad. I know this is correct because I bought Maximum Carnage at release and my dad yelled at me for spending that much of my money on it.

Oh man, I can't imagine spending $70 of 1994 money on Maximum Carnage. That game whooped me, I brought it back to the rental store after a day or so, and I was mad that I spent like $6 on it. It's actually a pretty decent game if you know what you're doing (save up superhero summons for the really nasty boss fights later on) and better to play on emulator. In 1994 though I wasn't having it.

My worst actual purchase regret was probably getting True Lies (SNES) for about $40, at a time when I hardly ever got new games. It isn't terrible, it's just ludicrously hard and not very rewarding in any sense and there were many, MANY things I could and should have gotten instead.

Best purchase was Earthbound for $25 from a rental store that was going out of business circa 1999 or so. I sold it at some point around two decades later for $950.

Oh man, Secret of Mana (and the cut content) is totally my jam. I spent hours and hours a few years ago studying this particular subject, cross-referencing Secret of Mana areas with Chrono Trigger areas, etc. I eventually concluded that Secret of Mana was originally supposed to contain time travel, which is why there are occasional things that are completely out of place, like the subway system area during the third-to-last dungeon. I also think Xenogears was supposed to be Chrono Trigger 2, and that's why it has so many little CT elements (all right near the beginning of the game) including an actual appearance by Lucca. Xenogears takes place over four distinct time periods (though only one is playable and the rest are shown in flashbacks of the reincarnated protagonists) and I get the strong vibe that it started life as a time-travel game where you actually went to these other distinct time periods. One of them is even an advanced civilization from the past that sank into the ocean, just like in CT.

With CT and SoM I scrounged up a lot of little things like:

-On the overworld map in The Empire (SoM) you can clearly see what looks like a fairground, with a town fair and a carousel, but you can't go there in the actual explorable town it's next to. CT opens with the Milennial Fair, which bears a striking resemblance to the phantom fairground in SoM.

-Out of the four main elements, the only one that didn't get a Gigas boss in SoM was earth element. One of CT's biggest and most memorable bosses? Giga Gaia, literally Earth Giant.

-Same goes for the dragons. SoM is missing an Earth Dragon, likely because it would have been ground-based and had a different model that they didn't have time/space to make. CT has the Black Tyrano which is pretty much an Earth Dragon in every regard. This one's a bit of a reach but it makes sense combined with the Giga Gaia thing.

The list goes on and on, actually. I'm really curious what the full CD-based 32-bit Secret of Mana would have looked like. Probably some sort of combination of Chrono Trigger and Seiken Densetsu 3, which each took various elements of CT and extrapolated them out to their logical conclusions (like the elemental palaces).

Most of the cut content of SoM (which was evidently around 40% of the story) likely took place in The Empire. While I think the time travel element of SoM was abandoned fairly early, I think they got pretty far in development with what we ultimately got before they did most of the cuts. Anything pertaining to The Empire - the towns, the fortresses, the villains especially - comes off as completely slashed. In the final areas the game acts like we're supposed to know who the hell people like Fanha and Sheex are, like they had entire storylines that just got left out. The Emperor himself is also a total enigma, dies offscreen and seems rushed as hell.

Final Fantasy 15, incidentally, had a lot of the same issues (massive cuts to the world) and does the same thing with the bad guys. The Emperor even dies offscreen with no fanfare there too, you never really get to explore the actual Empire after all the hype (or at least you get a super limited, cut-down version of it, like SoM).

While I'm on the subject of SoM, I feel like Elden Ring's designers definitely liked the game. The very end of the game in particular has huge SoM similarities, like the suddenly red sky, the ancient capitol completely transforming in layout, the great tree being in flames, and an ancient flying fortress being the final dungeon.

God, I fucking loved my SNES. I actually don't think a console has come close since in terms of pure joy I got from it. Ocarina of Time is still my favorite game of all time, but outside Mario 64, the N64 was fucking awful for someone who is primarily an RPG game fan. I completely missed PS2 because I played the fuck out of KOTOR on xbox (and morrowind since I was too broke to buy a PC at the time). Gamecube kinda holds a special spot in my heart because of a lot of angry Mario Kart Double Dash in grad school. It again had shit all for RPGs.

I'll probably get the Switch 2. Maybe not at launch, though. The economy is to shaky right now for big purchases. $80 for Mario Kart is rough, but Donkey Kong is $70. Kind of more interested in Donkey Kong at the moment.

This Switch seems a lot more capable as well.

there's a newer graphicked one on switch and steam, but emulator prolly fine.

man secret of man was so insanely fun. 3 players, just killing wolves with your bro. grinding spells and gold.

it's so insane they didnt' bring t he next secret of mana game to america, then legend of mana was so wacky. its like they didn't even realize what made SoM good.

secret of evermore (made by an american studio i think?) had really great mechanics ,but no multi player at all (though i have a hacked rom that adds it), and it's goofy as fuck in it's story/character dialogue.

they aren't region locking the switch 2, there is a version being sold in japan only that is region locked to Japan as its basically being sold at a deep discount (probably a loss) because Japanese currency makes their pricing power much weaker than US. The average salary in Japan is for example $40k/yr, way less than US. All those salary men, anime artists, etc make shit wages which is fine there because food/etc costs a lot less, on a trip there in 2023 big meals were $6-8/person at good restaurants vs $20-30 here.

For an extra $200 you can buy in Japan the region unlocked one too that works anywhere, the version locked to Japan is basically a way for Nintendo to subsidize the system for its local population.

Its pretty cool and a concept completely foreign to us retarded Americans, because corporations in America would fuck you over to make an extra penny. Imagine getting deep discounts in America on guns, ammo, doritos, and Mountain Dew because you're just American.

Isn’t secret of evermore a different company back then? It’s related to soul blazer and illusion of Gaia I think.
