IIRC there were nine parts outlined before the Empire Strikes Back was finished. After that film, however, plans for the last trilogy got rolled up into Return of the Jedi. There must be plenty of ideas from the abandoned trilogy that didn't end up in RotJ, but it's not like there's a shortage of extraneous Star Wars material for Abbrams to look through.

The first time I saw this mentioned was in a sidebar of Time magazine article that came out about the same time as Empire. It also said that the original vision for the trilogy of trilogies was that by the end of it, all of the central characters except for R2 and 3PO would have been killed or died and the entire story would end up being told through their eyes. I guess that was before George's epiphany that toys > storyline.

Only sounds retarded because its new. If you read any of the books you get familiar with it, just like with any new character.
Will be curious if they actually use those names though. Ben for Luke's kid and Jaina/Jacen for the solo twins or they just decide to ignore it.
