Ill definitely look at it but I’m not expecting it to compete. I imagine they would have been beating Nvidia up the last couple weeks if it was. I’d be happy to be surprised, I’m all for competition and options. I also need to finish my new pc, gfx is the last piece. If they’re competitive and it causes more stock to be available, from either one, great.
AMD will maybe compete on the level of the 3070. Maybe. Hoping for more than that it just delusional.

I think it will be closer to a 3080...but that extra VRAM will be what I and other are looking for, for that 4K gaming. Yes I know very few games utilize that much VRAM, but cool. Nice to know I won't need to worry about that this go around.

MLID said something interesting, or at least implied it in his latest video.

He seemed to be saying that instead of competing directly with individual Nvidia cards, that AMD is targeting certain cards to certain resolution performance. For instance, the highest card is meant to do 4k/120fps very efficiently while the next card is meant to do 1440p/144fps very efficiently and the card after that is meant to do 1080p/240fps very efficiently.

If this is the case, I think it is a very smart strategy as it is currently a pain in the ass to determine which card you should get for a given target of performance. Now, I'm not saying they can hit any of these targets reliably given the inherent uncertainty of dealing with so many varying builds, but I think this is an A+ marketing strategy instead of trying to compete card for card vs Nvida.

Now that all this 30xx is over. Anyone plan on looking hard at AMD? I am for sure.

I snagged a 3080 and I'm still looking - think that the 6900xt will compete fairly well, with no answer to DLSS. Really anxious to get some pricing as well.

from an amazon worker on reddit, who has been completely accurate so far (a small restock of Gigabytes came in today just as he said):
As a PSA for this chat, the largest shipments of 3080s are coming into amazon warehouses on the 7th of october. The primary units that will be available are the MSI tri (25k units) and EVGA xc3 gaming (10k units between the 8th and 10th), ftw gaming (2k units on the 10th, but intermittent drops of 10 -20, and 60 unit po's on the 5th) all of the other 3080's still have pretty low inventory counts coming in (less than 200 per po) for the time being

There will be 25k units of MSI and 10k+ EVGAs mid Oct. Now, amazon is doing Prime Day Oct 13-14th so its unclear if they will sell as they get them or hold them until prime day. But thats a LOT of cards, considering probably less than 10k total have been seen in the US so far.

EVGA has also said they will be having a ton of cards available in the next 2 weeks, on their storefront and etailers. Nvidia hasn't said too much about cards they are selling direct.

Hopefully it all means a huge amount of stock coming in mid month driving prices down. Already on stockx (ebay for sneaker guys basically) 3080FEs have dropped from $1500 24 hours ago to under $1375 now.

This is mainly due to the crashing issues on those cards. EVGAs ain't getting any cheaper.

I think the Big Navi card will be comparable to the 3080, but will probably cost closer to what the 3090 costs (maybe somewhere in between). They're not going to touch the 3090, I don't believe, but I don't think they have to, as there isn't as big of a market for something that powerful and that expensive, especially seeing only a modicum of performance improvements versus the 3080. I'm more interested in seeing AMD's CPU chips than I am their GPU's.

So it was just a driver issue then, which is pretty common for new launches like this. Interesting that the Linux driver somehow didn't have issues though, you'd think they'd fuck up that one especially.

So if you have the choice between EVGA X3 Black and an Nvidia FE 3080, which one would you get? I'm leaning towards EVGA for the step-up program, but I've never used it before.

Take the FE and sell me the EVGA. It is a win-win.

I did step-up before, it's a great program. They literally pay you retail price for your card. You will have to go a few days/week(s) without a card though.

I would say I want FTW3 > FE > XC3/TUF

But poscaps!!!

But derbauer was able to obtain a higher stable overclock when replacing SPCAPS with MLCC. It goes to follow that this may stabilize the 3080 when it boosts to high clocks as well. The new drivers just stabilize the 3080’s by reducing boost clocks.

Its a combination of aggressive boost AND poor capacitors/power quality. If you have pristine power quality you CAN clock higher.

The value in the EVGA Step up program is pretty huge. It's the reason the EVGA cards are selling at insane premiums.

Pet theory of mine: It may be not related to power quality per se, but how well the PSU handles sudden shifts in load. That GPU is the biggest power load in the computer, so maybe the driver change flattened out the ramp-up curve for clock boosts.

Derbauer is a sample size of one. @ 6:20 - Steve addresses the capacitors, and discusses stability reports from card owners with either a mixture, or even exclusive MLCC cap use.

Several reviewers have noted that the cards seem to have very little overclocking headroom, and the best explanation imo, is in the video. i.e. Nvidia tuned the drivers too tightly.

Nvidia is a bunch of lying pieces of shit.

In stock alert for the 3080 FE, get it in the cart and go to check out, nothing left. No captcha, nothing.

Capacitors are there to "flatten" the spikes in load. Which makes it easier for PSU to ramp up. That is their purpose.

Nvidia tuned drivers too tightly because they're constrained by the hardware. Now which hardware? Stop white-knighting hardware unboxed dude. They're not gonna fuck you.
