Probably because there's no real market for an EQ remake. I mean, he described EQ1, and then said

... because I ran out of cool new ideas.

We're having this discussion here and now, probably twice a year. Someone comes, laments "oh, why isn't EQ1 remadeproperly", Dumar usually pops to assent, and then a few lucid ones try to tell you that EQ1 was a fluke, that it worked because it was the first and only 3D "immersive" MMO at the turn of the century, and it broke down as soon as better and stronger game designs came out (WoW).

Then the whole F2P came, and an EQ1 clone is no longer a sub-100k subscriber game non-AAA game, it's now a zero subscriber cash shop indie game. And that's why you won't find someone with competence to make the game Brad describes, which is EQ1 with a few bits from Vanguard. Someone incompetent, yes. But competent people will not do that game, they will do a different - and probably better - game.
I like how you always show up and give your opinion as if it's fact. Not everyone liked WoW. I hated it and played for only a few months, whereas I played EQ for over 5 years. The success of WoW had absolutely nothing to do with it being better than EQ, it had to do with the fact that 99% of the video game population never heard of EQ, and 99% of the video game population knew the name Warcraft. Shit, most of my friends didn't even know what a MMO was when they bought World of Warcraft, they just knew the IP from playing Warcraft 1, 2, and 3. Saying there isn't a market for a MMO that's different than WoW is just fucking retarded. If every game has to be made like WoW, why have they all failed?

Considering most of them are making money in some form or another I'm not sure you can call them failures. The only one in recent memory that has failed so bad it got shut down has been Vanguard. You know, the throwback MMO that was suppose to be a love letter to harder MMOs.

Vanguard didn't fail because it was too much like EQ. And claiming that it shutting down proves anything would be as asinine as someone claiming WHO shutting down means PvP games are dead.

This is a stupid take.

Didn't Brad himself say 95% of the people who bought the game didn't make it past level 5? You know, back when the game ran beyond ass and FPS higher than 5 was good? The same game that, for people who actually stuck around, was a barren wasteland in large parts of the world because they never got around to working on them?

Vanguard had so many issues it really never has been fair to hold up as THE example of "see you got what you wanted and it bombed!!11!!!" that far too many people like to do. It's like Releasing Aliens: Colonial Marines and then saying "See! There's no market for Alien franchise games!!11!!!"

I'm highly suspicious that there was a credd dupe bug in that game that they never admitted to. It was so shoddy on the back end, and it's taken them so long to go f2p when it was obvious by the 2nd month they needed to, that it's gotta be something like that.

Maybe TESO made money because it was shovelware. You can pretend like TOR made money with some variable accounting and I understand that the f2p "harpoon the whales" model is profitable.

They're really not making the kind of money that a summer blockbuster movie makes. And that's their business model. So they've got a problem.

And we have 0 MMO's because they have a problem.

to be honest, there has never been a MMO or single player console/arcade/pc game that has held my attention for as long as Everquest did, before or since. i played WoW for about five years after i quit EQ, but that wasnt continuous. i played 3 months at launch got bored and quit, new expansion, tried out new content, played 3ish months, did all i wanted to do, got bored and quit. did that for a few expansions then finally got so bored i quit for good. rift i tried out for 2 months and got bored and never bothered logging back in again. havent tried the other wow clones, but i assumed i was more of the same. everquest i actually came back to after 11 years and played nightly all night for 5 months til i got really bad pains in my right wrist and had to quit. wrist is mostly better and i plan on making another comeback this winter. hopefully wrist issues have gone away. it sucks getting old.

The fact is by the time 2004 rolled around, most EQ players were ready to jump ship as soon as something 'better' came around. That's not opinion as EQ subscription numbers take a nosedive at pretty much the same time that WoW/EQ2 launched.

The sentiment that I remember at the time was that MMORPG players as a whole (most of which comprised of EQ players) were looking for something else. And last I checked, it's not like EQ players went back to EQ if they found out they didn't like WoW.
