The problem with Telegraphing in recent games like Rift and FFXIV is that you must 1) Zoom all the way out 2) Stare at the ground & 3) Avoid the red circles, line, or cone. That's what you had to do for almost every dungeon and raid mob in both of those games.

Positioning and movement should be important during an encounter, but don't turn it into a pseudo-platformer.

If anyone remembers Rift's first raid instance... Infiltrator Johlen was a prime example of this:

That would be HUGE for people who are interested in backing the game, but are being a bit shy. It has been said around this community for years...

Not only that, but empty forums look shitty for your game.
Yep. A lot of risks and work with a forum. Lets not forget, Brad here is the one that nuked the original EQ forums after the Donal's BP nerf (I think?). He's already known to use scorched earth, heh :p.

On that note though, if you do eventually have forums--or even on this site or others. I hope you guys really cultivate interactivity in the community in terms of building the game. Maybe some contests to let people write a little piece of lore, or create one of the Pantheon members, where people can vote and comment on it. Really tap into that nerdy table top gamer. Give your discussion forums focus, and direction and even goals--whatever you do, don't let gamers languish, they quickly turn on everything around them.

Don't get me wrong, I don't want you all to design by committee; I'm a believer that too many chefs in the kitchen makes a bad meal. But letting people leave little marks or be involved? I think creates great word of mouth.

Hi Brad! As I mentioned before, I am super pumped to see you working on a new project. Vanguard is a great game, even unfinished, and the classes in that game are the best in any MMORPG. I spent quite a bit of time fantasizing as I played about how awesome it could have been had you the opportunity to truly flesh it out. It was a world, not a theme park imo. There isn't anyone else making mmo's out there quite like you, and I can't wait to see what you have planned (/fanboy off).

I have a question, and not sure if it has been brought up before. One of the issues that I am concerned about is how you might intend to answer the potential problem of chunks of levels without people to group with as the game matures. Typically, unless you are the 1% poopsocker, or the 75% slow pokes, you can get stuck at a certain level with no one else to group up with and tackle necessary content. Now I don't want to take anything away from those top 1%, and I will likely be closer to that end than the other, but there comes a timer when I have to take breaks (as a small business owner) and then catch back up as much as I can. Have you given any thought to this, or do you not forsee this as a problem with your game? I imagine if it is more like EQ, then there won't be specific level zones, and more of a zone that has content for all levels (for each and every zone or area). Does what I am saying make sense?

Also, if there is anyway I can help get the word out about this kickstarter, please let me know.
We have a plan but it really needs to be tested. Basically, less levels and each level takes a while to complete. There will be sub-levels and other achievements while you are that level so you still see your character advancing. But if there are fewer levels, then there is more content per level, and more people that level. And then hopefully more people to group with.

Ah man, I'm with you. I wish there was some way.
Stream the data to the client as its needed per session, makes it harder but prevents users from pulling the item/lore/text/whatever database.
Local stuff like art dbs, would be smart to have nothing but indexes and what art sources they're using.

I uhh, have experience extracting information from game clients. >_>

You know , I used to be hardcore , "you've got to have official forums from the start" , but in this case I'd have to say in the current situation all time/manpower should be used spreading the word on existing forums and sites , get them talking on their own sites and keep visiting back there.

Once funded sure alpha forums will be great , but a site like this will still be invaluable , especially with the nature of the game and history of this crowd , for both enthusiasm and critique at the same time. A mix of both is needed and there's just the atmosphere difference that you get. Draegan and his mod crew do one of the better jobs I've seen , keeping a very loose leash but enough of one when needed. Too many forums on fansites to massively/mmorpg don't know how to do this.

I think Brad can get genuinely good feedback here from a fairly experienced crowd. Both positive and negative.

Brad , I appreciate your replies tonight , and I'm sure I sounded harsh in a few posts earlier , and I'm not going to apologize because I'm passionate about this type of game and think you are the best hope for it. I wouldn't have kicked in the 250 if I didn't believe that , and just know how important these 40 days are. Looking forward to the updates and talks over the next month.

Lastly on the forums note , one thing I think you and the folks need to do is make sure whatever closed alpha/beta forums go up , make sure they don't have the atmosphere of the closed Vanguard forums. I was in it from the point of the combat change on , and it felt very , very oppressive ,not from you , but from the die hards who screamed down anyone who questioned anything. Make sure and let folks know reasonable negative remarks are fine , discussion is good.

That's why I think RR can play an important roll in this , as it's a unique site / group of folks for this type of thing. And also , lots of forum folks on other sites are scared shitless of the group here , I've mentioned RR / FoH before and always get the reaction "that place is too harsh for me" , to actually saying they are scared to post here. In a weird way that makes it a good, unique resource here.

Plus we have Dumar.

Quaid are we going to be alpha testers/players/bitching in EQL and Pantheon ?

We need to get any other switch-hitters like us on here to build an in game advertisement for Pantheon in EQL.
Haha wonder if they'd allow that

Re-inventing the EQ wheel is going to be such a tightrope to walk. You can't have too small a population or the forced grouping kills your community. You can't have too many players or your 'social dungeons' turn into disasters. These are not easy problems to solve.

And I would really stress the dungeons. Those people don't even KNOW what a social dungeon IS.
I would like to hear someone explain the appeal of a 'social dungeon' to someone who hasn't played EQ before.

I'll take 1993 for sure!
It is one of the most embarrassing things to happen to gaming in general. Not just MMOs. Every single genre has in some way or another been dumbed down. This is one of the reasons I have started favoring games that are easily moddable. Skyrim, Mount and Blade, Fallout 3/NV etc. You can mod them to be as unforgiving/complex as you want. Or mod them to be a unstoppable god. Modding communities are one of the saviors of gaming for me sadly. Can't seem to rely on many developers to not sell out and go with design that = more customers.

So we need some of those crazy big guilds on board.. The HOSS type ha.. I just emailed an old VG guild I played in rift with.. Word hasn't spread far enough yet bc the game wasn't posted there.. I know for a fact if they got a hint of this project it would of been posted.. I think it's really just a matter of the info getting out still.. It's early but I'm predicting a bigger week 2.
