I think it's ridiculous to say, "X-Com didn't have a market, but its success obviously proved otherwise"! Well, duh? That's why it was made? There was enough obvious interest to justify green-lighting the project. All games made have enough of a market interest to justify their cost, yes. All games not made, don't have enough market interest to justify the cost of making them, yes.
No, that is silly. Because some games fail -- they don't make up the money spent on them. We can show that side with examples. Therefore it's pretty easy to theorize that some games that could make money don't get made. Do you honestly believe game publishers are 100% accurate in estimating interest in a game? Really? If you believe any amount of error could possibly exist, then it must be that at least some games that have a market do not get made (just as some games that get made fail to find a financially suitable market).

I don't know how much of a market Pantheon might have, but your absolute stance is very hard to understand.

Edit: I take back that last comment. The market Pantheon has is hardly any except for cultists. The type of market for a hardcore MMO I'm less sure about.

Are there any big MMOs that run on Unity? I had fun playing around with Unity, the download is free, but I don't remember seeing any big multiplayer games on their ap showcase page.

I think there is a definite market for "hardcore" elements in an MMO. However, I don't believe there is a market for what essentially amounts to, "EQ with better graphics". That market segment is easily covered by things like P99, EQClassic, etc.

Indeed. Just did a quick check. Thought it was Unity for some reason.

Must be because it sucked amiright?!?!

FWIW, the choice of the Hero engine was seen as a pretty bad idea. I really wonder how well Unity will do without anything having actually field tested it for an MMO. Of course, this is a moot point since Pantheon will never get that far, but still.

There'sProject Gorgonwhich, coincidentally enough, also failed to reach its KickStarter goal. But Project Gorgon has actually beenplayablefor about the same amount of time as Pantheon has "existed".

You know how it is with the balance between quality, speed, and cost though, right?

Really good post and the crux of this argument. No one truly knows what an old EQ style game could garner in interest. There is plenty of circumstantial evidence that could go either way. The only true evidence right now is that no one is trying to make an old style EQ game. I include this group of thieves who have done absolutely nothing so far. Quaid has out worked them in a weekend. No one has outtalked Brad but he's only gotten about 1000 to believe his bullshit. The bullshit that anything of significant effort has been done since, Sept. right?

I don't believe MMO players are finicky though. I think we haven't had a truly well made game that was based off the premise of a MMO for a long time. The premise being, that unique content is king. X-com was a fantastic game. It was well made in every aspect and therefore new fans as well as old could find it enjoyable. To compare it to this paper mache joke is laughable. To even compare this to the work of Quaid is insulting.

I don't give Brad much credit for EQ. Sure, the game was done in 3D. I give his TEAM almost all of the credit. As does SOE who still employs some of them. Guess where Brad doesn't have a job anymore? At a top notch studio. That would say it all except the KS and efforts lately show his incompetence even more effectively. Brad, the idea guy, is afraud.
Or maybe he is focused on making a game that the AAA studios won't fund?

From a design perspective vanguard was awesome sauce I have not seen anything since with better classes and dungeons. I think brad deserves credit for that ... no? Vanguard was one hell of an experience even with its tech failings.

I still believe there are some things left behind as the MMO space focus on how to maximize rmt dollars rather than making something worth playing more than 30 days.

Curious what folks would say the biggest advancement in the mmo Industry had been since 1999-2005...I would say all they have done is capture rmt dollars.

First, that is the worst example of focused I've ever seen professionally attempted in any field. Seriously. 6+ months for this? What's the timeline? 2025? Vanguard had some really awesome ideas. Loved a couple classes and the dungeons were better than average overall. Unfortunately, the GAME was crap. And having a really cool class only helped to accentuate the massive problems. Such promise...if only Brad really knew how to make games.

There is room for a few new games right now. This team isn't the ones to give people that. They've shown that quite a lot recently.

I don't think there has been any real advancement in the industry but that's not what this thread is about. If you want to talk about advancing the genre you head over to the EQN thread and see what that's all about. This is the old school thread. SOE is the only company really trying to advance the genre.

i'd agree with you if SOE was trying to do more than just throw minecraft and GW2 into a room together and force them to have a baby.

No, Brad deserves no credit for vanguard. That game was "made" in spite of his best efforts to turn Sigil into his personal drug money factory.

Just read the post mortems. The dude was in his office snorting pills when he bothered to show up at all. If you love Vanguard you need to give the credit to people who actually made what you love rather than giving it to the gloryhound.

Otherwise it's just indulging in hero worship. And I don't give a fuck. Worship whatever Heroes you want to worship. But that is not an argument -- that is a cult.

If reports of him being high and MIA the entire time Vanguard was in development are to be believed than I would say No, he doesn't deserve any credit for it.
